How a 19th Century Doctor's Tried to Get His Peers To Wash Their Hands

In the 19th century, physicians argued that Victorian hospitals offered modern, scientific care. But in Vienna, one doctor realized physicians were inadvertently ending the lives of their patients. That's because 19th-century medical practices did not include handwashing. Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis spent years trying to convince other doctors to wash their hands after performing post-mortems. He proved that handwashing could save thousands of lives, and yet most doctors ignored his evidence. One stated it simply wasn't possible for doctors to harm their patients, as a gentleman's hands are clean. Even after Semmelweis provided solid proof that washing hands and sanitized tools decreased the maternal mortality rate, doctors dismissed his findings

idk why you can't say miasma like every other english speaking country. it's pronounce MY-AS-MA it's very simple. I know you're American and you have to say every word with bizarre vowel emphasis all over the place, but please for me say scientific terms the way English people do because every other country on the planet thinks you all sound basic.

I asked my granddaddy if he wished for the good old days. He was born in 1896. He said some things he longed for but others he didn't. He and my grandmother lost their first daughter in 1923 from a common cold. He said hand washing in some clinics weren't practiced, and that we were fortunate to live in modern times

This dear man cared so much it drove him mad. To die in an institution like that is to suffer a purgatory before death. Those places were for suffering not for care. Don't attack folks who don't agree, you get no traction. Reminds me of the Anti-vaxholes. We have a preventative life saving measure. Nope.

Theory started with Semmelweis, and then proved with Garfield - The legacy of doctors in history is a disturbing one, I don't know when medicine will ever shake the incompetency and ignorant pride of the past, and not carry a paranoia, concern, or doubt, within people's minds

I imagine if I traveled back in time to the first century and tried to explain anything we consider common knowledge. They'd think me a God or mad. He knew the truth but people didn't want to believe and innocent people died. It's no wonder he lost his mind.

People assume that because someone has 10 years of schooling, they all of sudden know what they're talking. I guess we should just all get vaccinated, right? You find truth by personal experimentation. You dig thyself.

Ive read his story a couple of years ago & it made an incredible impression on me. On video now & during a pandemic, his life gives me a deeper kind of sadness. I wish he didnt have to feel all that

This is a reminder that even when you have these experts and scientists being hyped by people on social media, they, as a collective, can make terrible, terrible mistakes. And they'll never back down.

The 1000's of amputations performed (civil war) without wiping hands/tools for hours. I wonder what long term health issues occurred from them and the infections for the survivors.

That's why I get scolded the most by my seniors these days is for any interference in hygiene during a medical procedure
They're so sacred about hygiene and everyone should be

My grandmother was a midwife in the mountains of Virginia. She had 11 children and delivered many. She knew every root and herb. She sold herbs to the pharmacist in town.

The fact that there were a bunch of so-called doctors having a hard time understanding why people were dying due to unclean hands in instruments, just blows my mind.

What a pleasure it is to listen to you, sir. Giving us a wide range subjects. I find them interesting. Very entertaining. You have yet to bored the hell out of me.

After watching stuff like this it's maddening to see that science has been for the most part corrupted and used as a weapon to bludgeon political enemies

Could you imagine your doctor walking in with a bloody robe and thinking oh thank God I'm in good hands he must be very experienced.
