Maps have the power to change minds, as the 1861 map that convinced Lincoln to end slavery proves. Maps also have the power to save lives. One such map, the John Snow map, single handedly ended a cholera outbreak and revolutionized epidemiology. Dr. John Snows cholera map of London charted deaths in the Soho neighborhood during the 1854 cholera outbreak

U need to do a vid on Sydney's Quarantine Station on North Head in Port Jackson/Sydney Harbour. The Quarantine Station was brutal but it was done so nobody in the outside world would bring in disease to a disease free country. Every ship that passed thru Sydney Heads, went thru the Quarantine Station. Today u can go on ghost tours day or night & it's apparently very active as it would be as have acidic showers would end a life or two

Another reason he doubted miasma theory was that he was a surgeon that was an early adopter of ether and chloroform to knock patients out for surgeries/procedures (yeah, it wasn't that much longer ago that unconscious surgeries were even a thing. The patients would be knocked out, but no one else in the room was affected, so it'd stand to reason that gases (or smells) weren't potent at causing illness across a longer distance.

i remember we analyzed his map of the wells and pumps in AP Euro, and it's very fascinating! john snow's dedication is outstanding. many people would give up when they've been beaten down. he definitely is a modern hero!
i also think it's crazy, and somewhat funny, that drinking liquor and alcohol was much more safer than drinking water!

One of the first places we were taken to when we started college was the sewage pumping works at Erith. Bazalgette designed it as a result of John Snow's work. Without John Snow and later, Joseph Bazalgette, London would be up shit creek.

I watch this cause of thumbnail said he stop the epidemic and not pandemic instead
To stop the pandemic is to stop firstly the epidemic in each region of the country little by little slow and surely and come back strong and free.

Tragic when authority figures value money over lives, as well as preferring to remain committed to a faulty established, easy way of doing things, rather than accept the truth of the matter and commit to the challenge of improvement.

this john snow guy is really a hero. berated, blamed, work with such dedication, limited resources. yet he continue his work and prevent death caused by typical group of humans. always harsh time give birth people like him

So this sanitation board actually went against public safety because they didn't had the balls to admit they were wrong? Damn sounds basically like any other big health organization today

Interesting how he never mentions Henrry Whitehead. An equally influential scientist on John Snow. Also Pt 0 was actually an infant girl whose diaper was thrown into that basement!

The night soil men that were mentioned in this video at 5: 05 were more familiarly known as gong farmers because that's what they'd been called since Tudor times.

I like to walk a lot too and this is eternally fascinating too because it shows you how they delt with pandemics verses how we deal with pandemics and interesting.

It was a lot easier to just blame people on the lower rungs for being poor and gross rather than actually put money into fixing and updating their infrastructure.

John Snow was knighted when he gave chloroform to Queen Victoria for the birth of her son. Thus anesthesia became a specialty in which you Snowed your patients

Most of the major take-aways of this video are on point, but in many case the details are anywhere from mildly inaccurate to completely untrue.

I want to hear about Florence Nightingale. She accomplished a lot for a woman of her time and is the mother of modern nursing.

We listen to people of science. But those who have power are idiots who are infested with greed, arrogance and/or intolerance.

I can just imagine this conversation between the Londons sanitation department and Dr. Snow: You know nothing, John Snow.
reply

John Snow: Proves contaminated water spread cholera from one pump
London Sanitation Board: You know nothing, John Snow

cholera decimated tens of thousands in England
I REALLY wish people used decimate correctly, but they don't.
