My great grandfather was an iron worker on the Golden Gate Bridge. He was there from start to finish. He slung iron on the towers, the spans and strung cable. Every time I drive over it I wonder which rivets are his. He worked for the shipyards during WW2 building liberty ships, in the late 50s he worked on a span that ran from America to Canada that is remembered in song by Jimmy dean known as second narrows (the song is steel men. Then in the mid 60s laid the iron core for what would become the trade towers. I think he retired on that job. Almost 40 years wrangling iron. he died before I could meet him but he was a tough Irish SOB. I may not sling iron but I have his same mentality passed down from the men in my family. Work smart not hard, always keep safety in front of everything else, make it back home every day to your loved ones.

Love this one. I've walked on the Golden Gate Bridge and seen footage of its cables we owe these immigrant workers a lot! Our bridge the Golden Gate needs constant painting. Its super windy and dangerous up at the top. If you jump its like hitting pavement. I love you explaining the engineering for us lay persons. My Dad was a scuba diving instructor and took my uncle out in Hawaii where he had just gotten certified. Uncle saw a sea cave and started to explore, a morey eel came at him like a mad dog. He shot back up to the top. He was a doctor and knew about the bends but when he got it, it was very very scary. Could you please show us the Golden Gate and compare like I can't believe those holes folks decended into.

Interestingly, in 1883 P. T. Barnum suggested walking his elephants across the Brooklyn Bridge to prove its strength. He was initially turned down, but following the panicked stampede of pedestrians on May 30th, a display of the bridges strength seemed a good plan. So Barnum was given his chance and in May of 1884, Barnum marched twenty one elephants (and seventeen camels) across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Plz note a boat did not smash his toes. Roebling was at the river watching the ferrys taking all the people back and forth across the River when one of them smashed his toes. I lived in Roebling NJ for years and there is not only a museum there but his house still stands to this day along with most of the workers homes. Some of things he owned are in a museum in Trenton Too

See i thought all the wires were intentional in the original design so it's kind of both cool and creepy that they had to be added in because the wires are of poorer quality. I mean, obviously, it's working but now, whenever I see it, I'm going to be thinking about how close it was to becoming another suspension bridge disaster.

When he was 25 around this time suspension bridges didnt have a good reputation so he was born in the early 1800s placing that before 1850 and then they show a picture of the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapse that happened almost 100 years later if not more. Cant imagine the reputation they had in the mid 1800s

My great great grandfather died in an accident during the construction of this bridge. Someone fell from above him and landed on top of him and they both fell to their deaths. His name was Robert McNeill and was a migrant worker from Scotland.

This video makes me appreciate just how many people endured hard labor, danger, and sometimes debilitation and death to create an iconic and important landmark. Just think about what went into creating some other famous locations!

Yes I've crossed the Brooklyn bridge in a car. Would never walk across it. I walked half way across Golden Gate bridge - got terrified and turned around and ran back for dear life on dry land - I must have looked hilarious - haha

The bridge is one of my top two places in the city. I try to walk it at least once from the Brooklyn side. Its like coming home. I live in a suburb and have to get my city ambience when I can!

Theses bridges were already here built by a advanced civilization. Roebling FOUND these and didnt build them because they were already built. You should talk about the mud floods but you wont.

Roebling died because he thought he could cure his smashed toes by having flowing water running over them and refused all doctor advice. Sounds like he would've been a modern anti-vaxxer.

Hahahahah all of those poor people died in a stampede of ignorance! Oddly enough the same exact thing could happen today in 2022. But were so much more advanced today?

Do one on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It was opened twice because a guy crashed the ceremony on his horse and cut the ribbon with a sword in protest.

You could've also mentioned how P. T. Barnum held a parade of elephants across the bridge when it opened to reassure people of its safety.

I'd love to hear something on the Golden Gate Bridge or the Astoria Bridge up north. Bridges are interesting, and so are their histories.
