One of my step fathers friends, who died last year, was Fidel Castros personal pilot who disagreed with Castos tyranny and defected to the US with the help of the CIA. He told my step dad the story of when he first realized he needed to escape Cuba and Castro. He was with Castro one day when a woman in a crowd of people asked Castro when he was going to give them the public bus system he had been promising. Instead of responding, Castro told one of his men to just buy her an ice cream cone. The people werent to happy about this response and the pilot questioned Castros behavior and called him out on it. Castro kissed him on the cheek and said your like family to me. It was at that moment he knew he and his family were going to be killed if he didnt get out. Scary stuff.

Tyrannical dictators forget about their children to their peril. Unless they all are specifically indoctrinate, kept in a privileged bubble and raised to carry on the regime, they may see enough of it's underside to change their stripes. They may disappear when their support is assumed or sabotage the brutal work of their families. We can always hope that that some dictators simply are too big headed to imagine what would happen if they died, or lost power, or if their children were exposed to the true toll of human suffering they create. There's a heroism in that kind of change of heart, even if all offspring manages to do is disappear and become unimportant.

I'm just not sure Fidel Castro belongs on a list of history's worst dictators. He certainly rose to power in a military context and is not democratically elected, so his hands likely aren't clean, but he's made a fair amount of good decisions for the quality of life of Cuban people, for Cuban public services and for the welfare of Cuban workers (keeping sweatshops out of the country)--This in spit of all a long and crippling US embargo and other political meddling from the US and other global powers that wasn't in Cuba's best interest. I'm sure he's persecuted people too, but it's hard to see him belonging on a list with Nazis and such.

I can see why some of these sons/daughters cant see the evil in their parents, because they didnt see the atrocities that their parents committed and only remember the love that they showed them. So they hold on to the happy memories and how they remember their parents.
While we see the shadowed/evil side of these people through the reports and first hand experience of others.

I'm not surprised that Goerings daughter loved him. My sister's children has an alcoholic, abusive, waste of skin father and most of his kids hate him, except 2. They won't have a word said about him. It's hard to watch people love such a monster, but I guess it's different when it's your father. Glad mine wasn't a piece of shit like these lit.
