Buboes, black spots, and bloody froth: it was all in a days work for Black Death body collectors. The plague, which may have killed as many as 200 million people worldwide, changed everythingincluding body disposal. During the plague, millions of bodies piled up in Europe. Bubonic plague body collectors risked their lives to clear out the streets, all for a hefty paycheckand sometimes the chance to extort people out of their money

That's actually how we got the nursery rhyme Ring around the rosy? A priest who gave the deceased person or maybe people Last Rites then there's actually more dead bodies. The smell of so much bodies has to be very extremely bad and demoralizing. Flagellants of Germany would actually blame the Jews and other people for the pestilence and would actually put to death. Pope Clement the 6th said that it wasn't actually the Jews who brought it to Europe since the Jews actually was dying from it as well. Some of the priests were actually very extremely afraid of the illness that they wouldn't give them any Last Rites but they fled in terror. Those people who picked up the bodies became infected as well and died. There were actually so many people who died from the Plague that they had to burn the bodies. The living people actually stole anything from the dead bodies and the dying just to be alive and safe. Many people actually believe that God Almighty himself cause it for their own sins and trying to make God himself to bless them and forgive them.

This is really bothering me- WHY ARE YOU SHOWING A PICTURE OF JEWS BEING BURNED AT THE STAKE EVERY TIME YOU TALK ABOUT DISPOSING OF PLAGUE VICTIMS? The image that's repeated is from the Nuremberg Chronicles (1493, depicting Jews being burned as punishment for purportedly poisoning Christian wells and communion hosts. You can tell they're Jews by the triangular hats several figures wear, most prominently the bottom right hand figure. The hats are known as Judenhut and were a distinguisher Jews in many central and Western European countries in the Middle Ages were required to bear as a signifier (much like the yellow star was during the Holocaust)

I always think about what current day knowledge I would want if I were to ever time travel back to times like this. I think knowing that I could boil water in order to kill most germs and ailments in it and also clean my clothing and body with it. I would also want to know what I need to make a primitive soap in order to clean my person. And also knowing that hard alcohol has sanitizing properties. I would probably end up changing history by teaching everyone around me how to clean and be more healthy.

The scariest thing to think about is what if SARS-COV-2 was as deadly as bubonic plague. it already boasts a much higher infection rate than bubonic, I can't imagine if the lethality was higher, we'd probably get thrown back to 1350's Europe, burning piles of corpses to avoid contagion. At least in the modern age we have much more effective hazmat suits than the Plague Doctor outfit that didn't actually provide a lot of protection.

Yes I probably would have been a body collector. I was an HVAC man so I worked on walk in freezers in the morge. We couldn't take the body's out to work on the equipment so we just had to move them around. I won't lie first time was a little morbid but you get used to it.

I'm a mortuary student who also studies forensics as a side sort of hobby. I can probably stomach the actual sight of the bodies. the fear of infection however, would be another matter entirely. That said, in modern ages we have better medicine and hazmat suits.

Amazing video, it is almost like one of those dark nursery rhymes.
I don't know what it is about plague videos, but Weird History is a master of them (best I have ever seen.
Thank you so much for making the video.

It was always called the black death, not the black plague It was a plague, called the black death. You alternated between the two. I'm oversensitive, found it a little grating. Otherwise great video as usual!

Why was it called the black plague? Why wasn't it correctly termed the white plague? We were in Africa and had nothing to do with the filthy lifestyle in Europe. Use your own name for what you do not ours.

I would argue his original statement is false because the plague of Justinian was just as impactful if not more so than the Black Plague and killed just as many people if not more depending on who you ask

If I was confident that I wouldn't be infected, then I would have been a body collector.
It might be morbid and disgusting, but it still is a public service (and an important one.

It's amazing no matter what the subject, the narrator's comments are priceless - that's one reason why I watch every one. Keep them coming - you are the best of the best!

Please make a video about the winter war between the Soviet union and Finland and the continuation war, explaining why it happened. Thank you

8: 20 for some reason, this didn't shock me at all. There's always that 1 asshole out there and seemingly they never fail on stuff like that

I think this was far from history's worst crisis. The American slave era ranks a lot higher in my book. Sorry, not sorry.

The numbers are said to not have been so bad if they didnt lock the healthy in with the sick until the whole family was dead.
reply

8, 000 bodies a week. i don't think that's right. im not a historian. but that just sounds a little too high. could be wrong.
reply

Justinian Plague actually cause more people to die from the illness than the notorious Black Death during the Dark Ages
