Herge certainly started out as a Belgian Nationalist, racist, pro-colonialist and anti-socialist. However, his views did moderate - over time his books became less racist and more sympathetic to oppressed peoples. Anyone who thinks Herge was a Nazi should read King Ottokar's Sceptre - a book published in 1938, just before World War Two. In that book he very clearly took an anti-fascist position. During the war he faced the moral dilemma of whether to work, or whether to be unemployed, and he chose to work. He censored his own political opinions during that time - if you read books published during the war, (eg Secret of the Unicorn, Red Rackham's Treasure, Prisoners of the Sun, none of them contain references to world events, and focus on the supernatural. After the war he made books that - amongst other things - opposed slavery, criticised the soviet takeover of Eastern Europe, and satirised military dictatorships in South America.

Just repeating a comment from a user here. From Rory Blessington:
I'm sorry Weird History but you got quite a bit wrong. I suggest reading my comment from 11 months ago to really get the full picture. I studied Tintin all my life and read the books since I was 4 so please I suggest maybe getting your research from the Herge Museum, Moulinart and Tintinologists like Michael Farr and not somewhere like Wikipedia. Us true Tintin lover would appreciate it.
To add to his comment I would suggest this Weird History has definitely got an Agenda, like being hating NS Germany which was both moral and Christian in every respect, which goes hand in hand with him being Liberal Merchant lefty that hates the Nuclear family and everything moral.

In my opinion, we can't judge him, call him racist, or call him a collaborator. Keep in mind that everywhere the Nazis took over most businesses became owned by the state (especially when something like a newspaper or magazine was involved) He had a family to feed, and in his field of work all jobs at that time and place were under control by the Nazis. Also, it was very common for cartoons at that time to be racist. I'm not saying that's right, but people in Europe and america just tended to be ignorant regarding places like asia.

I admire the folks/Weird History who put this out; the comments are Intense! I am Presuming its by a group of folks versus just one creator. I would feel so compelled to respond/get upset, because Im an idiot/too tender-hearted.
Folks in the comments section have reacted to this Very passionately. Like the intensity is intriguing as well as what folks are drawing out. As if folks arent very differentiated, which cuts you at the knees. Its just interesting.
Great video!

Im not white and I love Tin Tin growing up, even now knowing what happened to his comic during the Nazi occupation I fail to see the author being racist or contributing to the Nazi party. He tried to work for other news papers but they all get taken over by the nazi. Moreover, every time I read Tin Tin (even the one that was written during the nazi overseer) I didnt getting Nazi propaganda being force on me; I was just having reading and enjoying the art work.

Sorry but this is just trying to make Herge look bad for more views brcause you wouldnt get people watching if it was just a documentary about Herge and TinTin. Seems like a lot of clutching at straws trying to make Herge look like a villain, sorry not buying it.
As for the racist depictions of certain races thats the way it was back then. You would see the same in Disney, Warner Bros, Marvel, DC etc.

If herge was racist with his congo story and drawings what about disney and the creators of asterix&obelix and probably most of other comic artists and animators. Comics and animations at the time always and also now had unrelaistic body parts caricatures etc. By today standards they can be found racist or inappropriate sure, but that doesn't make their artists automatically racist as well.

This malicious hatchet job is a typical piece of woke drivel. Herge dealt with hard times as best he could. Tintin is a great figure - a fine role model for boys today. Aspiring to be manly, kind, fair, courageous, honourable, and loyal to his friends. The speaker here sounds like an unctious creep.

Since the Belgian court couldn't find him guilty of treachery and fascism, there is no reason for us to do that as well. All of the press was under the party's control since it was a dictatorship and that's how dictatorships works. He was just an ordinary comic book author hired on the newspaper.

Weird History got rid of my comment explaining about the true context of Tintin because they were scared about getting the facts wrong. I did an EPQ on the political aspects of Herge's work and they deleted a post that took me several hours to write. Tells you how sad they are really.

You can't take away the timeframe of any artists and boldly put a stamp on them. About all surrealists were communists. Look how politically coloured Marvell is to this day. It is pure American propaganda.

I find it a bit ironic that you call out his racist depictions of people, yet you mispronounced the name of his Chinese friend. I mean, couldn't you ask a Chinese person? Nevermind, it's not a big quibble.

He seemed to have a lot of racist things in his earlier books I will admit but for someone who was writing these in the 30s and 40s I will say he changed his tune on his later works if you ask me.

I find this video and its content in regard to Herge, a total parallel to today woke agenda. Where the right is criticized and portrait as wrongful, but the left always left intact without criticism.

I'm not sure I would regard drawing cartoons for a Nazi-controlled newspaper as such a big crime. The guy had to eat, and it's not as if he was killing anyone or helping the Nazis militarily.

I found a copy of Tintin in the Congo in a library and it started off with a message from Herge talking about how he was embarrassed by it. I think he was a victim of circumstance.
