'Meganeura' - The Prehistoric Dragonfly With A Two-Foot Wingspan

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Three hundred million years ago, the largest insect ever known to humankind hunted in fern jungles and boasted an enormous wingspan of nearly 2. 5 feet. Different from modern dragonflies in its size and other attributes, the Meganeura earned the title prehistoric griffinfly from scientists. The first Meganeura fossil, discovered in 1880, eventually led researchers to a group of mega-insects, including Meganeuropsis permiana and other massive dragonflies. These creatures hunted prey using their enormous eyes, toothed mandibles, and sharp legs

The scientific theory is more oxygen in the air equaled larger body size? Uhhhh, ok. Another of man's very pathetic & woefully inadequate attempts to explain things from eons ago that if we're being honest, we have absolutely no clue whatsoever as to what accounted for them. The most notable example of this is the big bang theory: uh, there was an explosion. and. uhhhh. 'life' just uh suddenly sprang forward. and uhhhhh. evolved into what we have today. yeah, that's it! It is so hard to just admit we don't know?

I would love to know how they figure so much of this out! Its fascinating but not enough is ever said about who figured the facts out and how they got to those theories and conclusions. I can only imagine the years if not decades of dedicated research that goes into these topics and it has to be appreciated because it eventually shows up in our entertainment like movies (Jurassic Park for example) or games (Ark: Survival Evolved etc) and makes some of it more tangible and real to us.

If yall havent seen The dragonfly video from zefrank Stop what youre doing and go watch it its only a few minutes. You will thank me later. Dragonflies are one of the most incredible predators, and one of the only creatures that CALCULATE where their prey is going. and head it off at the pass. instead of just chasing its prey.

I love your videos! Your humor is unmatched and a constant source of entertainment for my son and I who share the same dry humor. I look forward to your videos as soon as they are posted. Thank you for all the laughs you have brought us!

This gave me a flashback. Could've sworn as a kid I saw a huuuuge dragonfly with similar colors. Though I was very young and I'm sure it was just my imagination running wild, but this came close to what I thought i saw XD

the part about dinosaurs is just wrong, there was absolutely no overlap. in fact, meganeura was almost exactly as old to the archaeopteryx as the archaeopteryx is to humans (300 vs 150 ma)

Meganeura might have had a wingspan of 2 feet wide, but a bald eagle has a wingspan of between 5 and 6 feet; the HEIGHT of an average man. That beats a toddler any day.

A particularly large mutant meganeura, named Megaguirus, once did battle with the King of Monsters, Godzilla, who summarily kicked the bugshit out of it.

I love dragon flies, though I may be a little more wary of them if theres a possibility that theyll sew my eyes and mouth shut. Talk about nightmare fuel.

If meganeura were big, imagine how big humans would be if we were alive during the prehistoric era. We all be basketball players!

This thing reminds me of the 1981 movie Caveman where Ringo Starr smooshes a giant flying insect that lands on Dennis Quaid's face.

Giant prehistoric dragonfly versus prehistoric frog, same as modern eagle versus modern rabbit, evolution repeating itself.

This species inspired both the larva monsters in 'Rodan' (1956) and the titular antagonist in 'Godzilla vs Megaguirus' (2000.

If these things ever come back to life, I'm throwing the Bug-a-salt gun away and just breaking out the 12 gauge buckshot.
reply

Eh I'm sure swinging a stick at it would scare it off. Now if there were multiple of these attacking you that's scary
reply

I dunno I feel like dragons are probably bigger than gryphons so that name doesn't really make sense.
reply

The idea that these large creatures went extinct because they were out-competed by birds is fascinating.
reply

Lie. The world is not millions of years old. That's a lie. I guess now you can call them government
