You never once mentioned the fact that a subset of pinball machines from the 30's through to 1980 were full payout machines called BINGO games. Bally made many of them (look up the designer Don Hooker, Bally's Bingo design genius. They stopped making them in 1980 because by then video slots took over that specific market in bars and places like that. Bingo games paid out significantly and you could adjust your odds before your plunge in most games. In your video look closely at the games being smashed in your black and white photos, yes some are genuine pinball machines but around 90% are actually bingo games (you can tell by the card and hole layouts on the vertically longer backglasses of those games. La Guardia and all those people lumped all pinball together but bingo was a huge driving force for these companies and there is no doubt those games were gambling machines. -- Pinball Aficionado

Very easy simple concept basic logic if life is not free why the hell would death be any cheaper it's not. So the question one may wonder is the spiritual cost to one's own soul and spirit for having lived and died only using the smallest percentage of A fraction of the true potential they were first born with equally as reckless neglectful at the same time to the lowest standards of quality for so many years now global pollution has diminished the quality of life to the point where today's people are living, dying and yielding the worst spiritual kickback that has ever been manifested since the beginning of life only getting worse. As a teenager from the '70s I'm well aware of the pinball craze New birth as it was obviously around for a lot longer than I knew but I knew that it was popular in the '50s. My sister had to have a pinball machine after that one afternoon during the summer she set up a bar stool near our front door and counted over 100 kids Plus came through that door to play that pinball machine for free. There was only one person that had to pay to pay the machine that was me I never played one game on that pinball machine out of personal boycott. She also used it as a safe to protect her valuables while her hoodlum friends robbed me and our mom blind.

The only place in Cascade Montana at the time being with a pin ball machine was one of the bars. Sad to say the experience led to Boy Scouts, college, grad school, 50+ years of marriage, 40+ years of college teaching, and frequent elections to parish and city councils. Pin ball is a slippery slope. ;-)

In the mid 70's I had a 1964 Williams Big Daddy in my bedroom. I used to play it for hours a day and the neighborhood kids would all come over for some games. Fast forward to 2009 when I first got into pinball competitions. Now in 2022 pinball is my one and only hobby. I collect them, repair them, and of course compete in leagues and tournaments. If I had to put a number on it, I would say modern pinball is about 80% skill and rules knowledge, 20% luck. To do well you have to be good, but also catch a few lucky breaks along the way. I was born the year the flipper was invented. When I was a boy, I lived in a very small town that hadn't gotten the newfangled machines. One game cost a nickel, but if you deposited more nickels, the possible payout increased. It was definitely a gambling device.
And as late as the 1970s, in Eastern Kansas, if you wanted to get an alcohol license for a pub, if you had pinball, the machines had to come from one distributor that was 'approved' by the Kansas City Family.
So, yes. Mayor LaGuardia was right. They were gambling devices and the mob was involved.

You might think about doing one about the complete twit who tried getting comic books banned in the 1950s. He saw them as a horribly corrupting influence on children. LaGuardia also went after burlesque shows (strippers) in the 1930s. His predecessor, Mayor Jimmy Walker, had no problem with such entertainment. But Fiorello hated burlesque as much as he hated pinball machines. The guy seems to have had a number of hangups!

chicago today? remembered for the bulls & deep dish pizza? how bout the insanely high rates of murder, random shootings, among many other violent crimes? I would not dare step anywhere near that city, even today. not until that Lori Lightfoot is at least out of a job, even then would wait a couple years for them to clean the streets up. It's a shame that beautiful city has gone to shit in a handbag.

Before the introduction of flippers (in 1947) there were games called Bingo games which owed a lot more to luck than to skill. While most of these did not pay out directly, they would keep track of credits. Credits could be used to play more games but sometimes, you could go to the operator and they would pay you for the credit. That made these game gambling.

When I was in my teens pinball was a form of gambling. When you reached a certain score, you would tell the man behind the counter then he would call the cook in the back who would come over and write down your score and give it to the cashier who would pay you. I seldom won, but my older cousin was a pro. It definitely took skill.

My mom always had a pinball machine at her beer joint. Nick Civella owned the amusement machine company who was head of the Kansas City Mafia at the time. It was a legitimate business he had. I didn't find out until the 80s he did. The rental on the pinball, bowling machines, etc was part of the money.

The Sega Game Gear was wayy ahead of its time.
It was literally the handheld version of the latest of the time. Much more superior than any of the Gameboy(s) of that era, in quality.

I would like to learn about Thomas Edison paying ruffins to eliminate others use of movie cameras. Edison a movie camera and thought that no one else could use a movie camera even it is was not of his design. Is this why the movie industry kept moving further and further west ward?
