Spewing there's no trumpeting & heralding these days otherwise I'm sure as a little girl i would've asked 'Santa' for a trumpet & practicing hard while dreaming that one day i could represent 'Straya. It could actually make the Modern Olympics watchable in the second week after the swimming events are over as that's really the only time my country gets a chunk of the medals mainly gold. Swimmers us Aussie's are, but land dwellers or athletes in track n field we aren't lol

The Highland Games tradition in the United States has a similar history. When they started the competitions were strictly athletic. Then, sometime in the last half of the 19th century, piping and dancing competition was introduced. Today piping and dancing have become the main events (disclaimer: as a piper, I can't claim to be entirely unbiased) with athletics playing an important, but somewhat periferal role.

Fun fact: Emperor Nero actively participated in the Olympics that were held during his reign, specially in chariot races and music contests that he himself introduced, casually winning in each and every one of those competitions (even though he even fell from his chariot during one race) After Nero's deposition and subsequent death by the Senate, the judges of said Olympics declared the Emperor's victories void

I wonder if ancient greek philosophers had any idea just how far their writings would reach? I mean here we are thousands of years later discussing some of them with better knowledge than most of us even have about our own grandparents and great grandparents. Incredible. Makes me wonder who alive today will be remembered in 2, 000+ years time.

6: 17 - Apparently, you didn't bother to notice that that coin clearly shows the wrestlers wearing loin cloths. That's because it fing hurts to have your scrotum pinned to the mat (or more likely, sand) with your opponent's knee. Many races were also not run in the nude, but clad in full armor, with shield.

Now Im convinced Rome was absolutely chock full of hmos. You cant convince me that the men back then encouraged things like nudity in sports, the taming and grooming of young boys into gladiators or athletes, purely for tradition lol
