Kul does not mean slave. rather, it means one who serves. An example sentence; Aren't we all servants of God?
Sultans are also servants of God, but what distinguishes them from other servants is that they are the ones who implement God's provisions on earth.
There were Turks among the janissaries, but high-ranking janissaries were chosen from these devshirme people. The reason for this was that the Turks could stand with the other great Turkish dynasties against the Ottoman dynasty and this put the Ottoman dynasty in danger. Also, do not confuse the concept of slavery in the Ottoman Empire with the concept of chattel slavery.

The Austrian empire was right on the doorstep of the Ottoman empire and the Austrian empire is of course very famous for its great classical composers like Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, Fux, Beethoven etc -Janissary music and Turkish music in general influenced these composers and those compositions known as Turquerei were directly inspired by this music. Janissaries had a jangling musical instrument known as The jangling Johnny that was adapted by western military bands. There is a section in Beethoven's 9th Symphony -just before the famous choral part Ode to Joy' that features Turkish military music.

Would love to see some citations on this-- the janissaries are one of the few real world instances of the kind of system in place in the fantasy I'm world building. There's only so much I can research through audiobooks and such, though, and I don't have the energy to figure out what terms I need to use, how to use academic library search engines, deal with libraries in general. it's a lot. I kinda assumed you always put some works cited in the desc? I guess I also don't tend to actually look for one, though, so I guess that's a pretty niche interest, eheh.

It's that time of night where I call you out for using BCE and CE instead of BC and AD. It's a Christian Calendar, it's pivot point turns on the birth of Christ. hence AD and BC. What is the pivot point between BCE and CE? Oh yes - the Birth of Christ! Use the proper calender terms please good sir, or come up with your own caledar with own terms of reference. Otherwise, as always, excellent video! Do one on Jimmy Hoffa and Teamsters.

I wonder if they were supposed to be like the Viking bodyguards of byzantine emperors (loyal only to him, because they were outsiders.
Only for the ottomans to find out slave-soldiers are a bad idea: many are just going to be 'woops, i am sooo clumsy, sorry i lost to your enemy who promised to set me free'

In Greece mothers were jumping off cliffs with their children to prevent them from being ethnically brainwashed and used to kill there own people. Amazing how their best soldiers weren't even Turks. But kidnapped christian children. If you want to conquer Europe, Use European soldiers

How is the position of Soup Cook demeaning lmfao. They were self sufficient, and essentially were brothers in each groups.
The cook was the head janissary of each group.
They even won a war against the Austro Hungarians in the battle of the kettles.

The corruption started when the Ottomans ended the blood tax system and allowed anyone to join. The real janissaries with the Christian background were one of the most perfect soldiers ever existed in history of mankind.

It's ANNO DOMINI, Year of Our Lord, A. D. Not C. E. Don't make me tell you this again. What did I expect, since you made a Game of Thrones reference to appeal to the Great Unwashed.

It explains why the sultans had huge harems. His soldiers were celibate, so the top guy had to make up for their celibacy. Poor sultans had no sleep, they had to work deep into the nights.

1: 30 its always been kind of a mystery to me why crossbows werent used as much as bows, seeing as though they are FAR superior to the bows, specially in terms of power and accuracy.

Elite Slave soldiers were not new to that part of the world. Mamluks were another type and they took over Egypt and beat back mongol invasions. The Ottomans then conquered them later.

name didnt change in 1453. It was called Konstantiniye in Turkish. Name change happened in 1928 by law. Because of putting a line between imperial past and modern republic.

It always baffles me how slavery can be controlled so long, Especially when they're highly trained And relied upon.
You think they eventually rebel for better lives.

Small correction: Until 1930 it was called Konstantiniye (Constantinapolis), its changed formerly to Istanbul in 1930 which its name comes from Greek word Stan poli.

And to think this great empire fell not too long ago. Imagine if they kept the good fighters. Basically, they were Persian ninjas.
