How A Notorious Criminal's Pet Hippos Are Still A Huge Problem Decades Later

Pablo Escobar: kingpin and. animal lover? In the 1980s, Escobar's zoo at Hacienda N poles took shape, filled with exotic animals, including hippos. The zoo was only functional for about 10 years before the Colombian government claimed it, but during its heyday, Escobar allowed locals to explore it for free. He even bussed children to the zoo. Today, however, those hippos are causing quite the uproar in Colombia. While hippos aren't native to South America, that hasn't stopped them from making a home in Colombia, wandering away from Hacienda N poles, and multiplying quickly. These hippos haven't hurt anyone yet, but it's likely only a matter of time before these sometimes dangerous animals get too close to humans for comfort.

Goths at the beach killed me. Being in a beach town and growing up when the ever so pretentious goth trend was rampant they are uncomfortable in nature. Goths are completely unfamiliar with sun light or fresh air. You know hippos kill people every year in Africa. Hippos and elephants they get pissed off being trapped in city situations and they run into the road and crush cars. I usually root for the pissed of Hippos and Elephants they're like hey I'm just trying to get from here to there and your car is in the way.

Yeah I was gonna say it could be because of the climate being perfect for the hippos is why they kept them there and then you said the same thing so yeah probably was cuz they were like we're not moving these aggressive huge hairy b in this climate perfect some more or less don't move them if you don't have to
reply

See the problem with culling them by killing them is that in Africa the hippo is a protected species so it doesn't make sense to kill them when in Africa its illegal to do so. If anything start charging tourists to see the hippos so then its economically beneficial to ur country.

Damn. I feel like the people against euthanising the hippos are missing the full picture. They could become a huge issue as an invasive species. I love animals that is why I think they should euthanise the hippos in Colombia, as I worry for the native species.

Escobar had 4 hippos. Wouldn't that mean all the hippos are inbreed since all of them would be related in just one or two generations? It's just brother sister mating now. Also, wouldn't this eventually wipe themselves out due to genetic problems and bottle necking?
reply

As much as I hate euthanising/cruelty to animals, I think that the best bet for these hippos are to be euthanised so as to not create an imbalance in nature. As sad as it may be, nature is rough and if nature cannot help here, then humans will have to intervene.

They need to ignore citizens and just exterminate them. They are an invasive species that is almost certainly going to destroy the ecology of columbia. Peoples misguided feelings are not a reason to allow the ecology of columbia to be destroyed

They should just start selling Hungry Hungry Hippo board games there. If those hippos are staying, they may as well be more of the culture.
They could even put flower signs in their inhabitants, then those Hippoes could also be Hippies.

As a Colombian citizen, I can't express how much I've loved this video. I can attest that, given the volume and girth of some of my compatriots, we're already living in the Planet of the Hippos, except, they're not cute.

Columbia needs to have a regulated hunting season for Hippos. In Africa, Hippos kill more villagers than do Crocodiles. Most African countries have a managed hunting season. They destroy habitat. Bring in hunters!

I wonder how many people were fed to those hippos. Cartels aren't exactly known for killing their enemies humanely and if someone needed to get rid of a body well I think you know what they would've done.
reply

I got an idea. What about hippo birth control. What if they put some bc in a food source in certain areas for certain amount of time. Like the north for 5 years the south 5 years for population control
reply

I find it highly offensive and inappropriate this video compares the physical appearance of hippos to Vin Diesel when everyone knows they look a lot more like his mum! She probably is one, in fact.
reply

Nobody wants to face the practical solutions. There are only 2 choices here, wipe 'em out or let 'em thrive. But, no, like always, it's just a bunch of useless talkie, talkie and gripey, gripey.
reply

Doesn t seem like there s anything they can do. They re stuck with the hippos. If moving them causes so many logistical issues and people are going to get mad at anything you do, you re stuck.
