What we are observing about Betelgeuse today happened 650 years ago. It took that long for the light to travel to our location in the galaxy. When the supernova/explosion actually happens, we will view that with the same 650 year delay, and any effect on our planet would occur almost immediately at that time. So, if Betelgeuse went Nova 6 months after the stage we are now observing, we would see that in six months and experience anything that could affect us as well? However, as the -experts- say, 650 years of travel should lessen affects that could happen if we had been closer.

if it exploded right now. we wouldnt know or see prof of it for a minimum 600 years.
but if it exploded 600 years ago, nothing would happen to us. we would see it get a lot brighter. we might be able to see the star in the day light for a couple of days to a couple of weeks. we will not be in danger it is too far away from us to cause and damage or harm.
now if the closest star to us exploded it could very well destroy us

1: 11 We would call this red supergiant, since a normal red giant can come from smaller stars like ours.
2: 55 I wouldn't say that the length of the actual event is related to how far away it is from us. A 2 month event (for example) will still last for 2 months even when its light reaches us 650 years later.

Din moment ce noi vedem aceste imagini de acum 600 de ani, cum ca steaua inca nu a explodat, cum putea avea pretentia ca poate vedem supernova in aceasta viata? Supernova va fi peste 600 de ani. Sa ne multumim daca vom apuca sa o vedem explodand prin telescoape live, iar lumina sa se vada peste 5 generatii!

Nice video, but some of the facts are wrong. It's not one of the biggest stars in the universe, far from it. But it is a thousands times bigger than the Sun and would reach out to Jupiter. It will not become a black hole, but it will be a supernova when it's going off. Then it will become a white dwarf.

When they tell you this star is going to explode soon. They are going by the human timescale where soon could be weeks or years. But soon in the cosmic timescale could be 50 or a 100 million years so don, t rush outside and expect to see a supernova. You could have a long long wait

What if Betelgeuse has already gone nova? In the the 650 years?
Even when the -Shock Wave- arrives, who care? I won't do much as it may have weaken by the time it gets here!
Shock wave = the blast from an explosion, e. g. Giant star such as Betelgeuse, TNT or Nuclear.

It's a simple confusion. As we are seeing Betelgeuse flittering today, it means that it started flittering more than 650 years before. As the time period for explosion is 50 years, we are going to see it within next 50 years (2019-2069)
