The scientific community needs to step up. While I applaud wealthy actors recently appearing on TV in opposition to Trump and his supporters. Famous celebrities that under threat of loosing many of their fans, choose to put their reputations on the line to do what is right is admirable. However, race and climate change are two of the most pressing issues in our country today. Just as the most distinguished scientific minds chimed in to combat the disinformation in regards to climate change, I also think the time has come for a concerted effort to combat the false idea of race on the scientific front, by those educated and qualified to speak on the subject. Scientists need to step up and help America deal with its issues on race. Most of the political divisions in our society boil down to false assumptions on race and I think the scientific community has been negligent in tackling it.

Think damage from a bullet versus a shotgun. Just as bad. Blow up a large rubble-pile asteroid and it will still have the same mass; it will still transfer the same heat into the atmosphere. And the big pieces still impact the surface catastrophically. Additionally, you now have an irradiated giant shotgun blast, instead of a non-irradiated giant bullet.
Early detection and deflection is the only way.
I'm glad you touched ways to deflect a large asteroid, gravitational tractor, laser initiated offgassing, mounted rocket motors.
I'm sure we can tackle this problem if we have enough advanced notice. Yes! Let's get up to 99. 999 detection of all large NEOs!

I think it's really important that we still continue to catalog and track as many NEOs as we can.
But here's the deal when it comes to the potential doomsday asteroid:
If ever we're faced with that scenario, I personally feel it would be better to blow it up(if we can. That way, we'd have hundreds of smaller asteroids that can do localized damage instead of one gigantic impact that could end all life on earth as we know it.
It's the lesser of two evils, I find. :)
BTW, I STILL don't like Bill Nye the science guy! :P

If nudging the astroid away from earth is not an option then blowing up an astroid will increase its surface contact with the earth-s atmosphere therefore more of its mass will be burned before impact. It is better to have smaller peaces of an astroid hit the earth rather than one massive one that would go much deeper into the earth and bring up much more of the dust that will cover the sun for years to come!

hey what if can you make different types of videos where they dont suddenly start but have been normal from the start? You know like what if fire was cold and not hot. Make a video that shows what wouldve happened if it was natural and make one that suddenly happens

He's crazy
If we blow an asteroid it's mass divides from Einstein's theory of relativity e=mc-2 if mass decreases then energy also decreases thus the film got it right but not he.

What if we fire multiple layers of nukes at that astroid. 1 will tear it. then second layer of missile will track attack the smaller ones

Didn't Michael Bay already cover this?
Just send Bruce Willis, some oil drillers and a nuke up there.

I'll rather blow up the asteroid because have of the fragment will probably burn up in the atmosphere.
