This isn-t entirely accurate. You wouldn-t need orbital velocity just to reach space. You could go straight up at any speed and eventually get there, but as soon as you run out of fuel you-d fall back to earth. You wouldn-t burn up due to much lower speed and thus friction, but could build up a lot of speed before air friction slows you. The highest human space jump to date has been from 41 kilometers up, so no one has tested this from true space.

I would have liked a more imaginative view on the subject. Say that the person rode a Balloon up to the highest point possible. Then when the balloon popped, they then switched on a jet pack. And how far would those packs be able to take you. With current technology could they actually reach the International space station?

How to go to space without a jetpack.
Step 1: Rent a truck which has broken rim.
Step 2: Book cylinders and fill the truck with those cylinders.
Step 3: Drive.
Step 4: Start welding that broken rim.

You wouldn't be able to return to earth/home unless you send up a rocket or vessel yo bring you back down to earth. With out a ship or vessel youd burn up in the atmosphere within seconds dumb dumbs.

What if you just wanted to get elevated into space and then come back down? That's what I was hoping to see here. No need to get the jet pack to 15k mph and no need for extra fuel to decelerate.
