Our family lived with Eastern Black bears for 17 years. In general, they are timid and prefer to keep their distance until they get to know you. Once they do get to know you, they get curious. So it was not unusual to walk by a window in the summer and see a fur covered face staring in at you.
As we got to know them, it was a fascinating experience. Weirdly, much of what we read about black bears was wrong.
Since both we and the bears lived in close proximity to each other, we had a lot of close encounters with them.
The secret was to stay calm and unthreatening and simply back away. Never be a source of food to a black bear, and never be a threat to them.
Remember, this only applies to Eastern Blackbears. Other species are far more dangerous.

Obviously, you stand your ground and use Kung-Fu. Try a front flip over the bear first and smack his ears. then a double-back-flip and poke his nose. Try the crane-move where you kick his chest sending him rolling backwards. the bear will respect your power and bow to you. Easy.

If you see Grizzly bear, run back at black bear, Grizzly will run after you and will meet with polar bear, they will start yelling at each other and you can quietly walk away
