Something seems to have been missed here: The audio signal stored on a pvc record has to be pre-equalized by RIAA curve (and then dynamic-compressed to prevent too strong stylus movements. That means: Treble is gained, bass is reduced. The phono pre-amp does undo that by applying the opposize equalisation. If the RIAA pre-equalisation is missing, the playback is extremely dull (because the pre-amp does undo something that isn't there): -D

I had a thought, keeping in mind I know nothing about 3d printing. Would you get better results if instead of creating the model using the audio file (which by the way is genius, but instead take an original vinyl and somehow scan it into an image and create a model based on that? I would love to see it possible to make high quality vinyls, if I could somehow do this one day. oh my god thats an awesome possibility.

I think the problem with the extreme bass and the needle getting pushed out of the grooves can be fixed by adding RIAA equalization to the audio files. That way the bass is cut and the treble is boosted. This process is reversed when the record is played and the sound goes through the pre-amplifier, which brings the bass back up and lowers the treble.

I LOVE THIS CONCEPT! 3D PRINTING IS WHAT YOU PAY ATTENTION TO HERE. The needle is accumulating alot of filament and gorging out the grooves. Musically, already poor quality and with each play it would continue to deteriorate( However, this is all about the printer technology itself)

Would it be an analog or digital record? The music isn't recorded in 1s and 0s on the record, but its printed with a digital machine which divides the analog waveforms into quantized steps in order to print them using digital circuitry. I don't need sleep, I need answers.

I can hear the grain from the printing processes on the record, they sound like crap.
Its cool how it works and interesting and all, but so is music etched in to post cards or even x-ray photo's like they did in the Soviet Union.

You need to equalize the music before writing it to the record. You need to push down the lows and boost the highs. This is not actually an issue with the records, but in fact, how the music is intended to be written to records.

I remember when she did the Pixies print (which was the actual first 3D printed record. I told her at that time to take her source and add the RIAA curve to it otherwise she'll run into the issues she has.

I would suggest playing the records with a stylus designed for 78rpm records. It's wider than an LP stylus and would fit better into the large grooves. Cool project!

I' probably missing something, but why are we using the latest technology to imitate _extremely poorly_ what we could do pretty well even 100 yrs ago?
