To be honest 5, 10, 25 years out wont help anything. football will most likely be long gone. There's already a big decrease in parents willing to let their children play and I don't blame them. I love the sport but technique and materials should have been changed ages ago. And honestly you can put as many high tech designs and padding into things as you want but nothing can prevent the brain from moving separately from the direction of the human skull and concussing.

It seems like a near impossible task to prevent CTE and brain trauma in the NFL. Measuring is good, new helmets are good - but how can they prevent the near-instaneous changes of direction the head, and thus the brain, that occur when a player is hit hard? Yes, the impacts themselves can be lessened to a degree through advanced padding design, but the change-of-direction movement is still present. You don't have to have helmet-to-helmet hits to suffer brain trauma.

Let's ban punches in boxing because of all the head trauma! Good on them for working to make helmets safer and equipment more informative, but suggesting they change the game is ludicrous. They sign up for it, and are well compensated. Sick of people who mostly aren't even fans saying they should change football as if they get some kind of kick from ruining things they don't even care about.

This is an atrocious comment section. People saying this stuff isn't interesting and what not- come on. Who cares if you're entertained by this or not- brain injuries are a real world problem that affect real people, and a solution to the concussion issue would help not just football players but the other millions of sufferers from concussion per year. Thanks for covering this, WIRED

It's not the helmet. Yeah, we can always change the helmet, but it's the movement of the brain hitting the skull from the hit. Sometimes, head to head hits happen, but it's illegal, so it's never the actual hit. It is the movement of the brain hitting the skull that damages you

Everybody that's ever played football knows the risk except for the pussies that are too soft to play that's why there's games like soccer for you Cowards. And 95% of the people that come out about cautions or full of shit looking for a paycheck

Or you can just play real football (soccer) like the rest of the world not a game called football that you play with your hands. At max you can break a leg but you won't die. Problem solved! :D

They should take contact out of the game. That should make the players happy. Better yet, to totally eliminate any chance of injury, they should pay everyone to just sit on the bench.

the only way to prevent concussions is to modify the human body not the gear maybe in the future we can make are body able to take hits without having a concussion

I love how they've been taking so many steps in making football safer and better, yet they haven't taken a single step in letting girls play
