Joshua Foer can remember anything, including the first 100 digits of Pi. The former U. S. A. Memory Champion explains how he-and you-can memorize anything using the major system technique, which converts numbers into words and images. SUBSCRIBE for more videos

For me, this is way too complicated. I have remembered approximately 300 digits so far by using mathematical operations and graphs. I don't need to remember every digit, just the important ones and the operation which usually gives me more than 2 digits, and then start over again with the last digit as the new start digit.
So for example: 3, 14159265358.
I remember 14, then 14+1=15 and then add 4 and 5 => 9. so 14 15 9
then I remember 26 and then a -valley-: 535 (if you would plot 6 5 3 5 it would make something like a graph or the shape of mountains) => 26 535
then add last two digits 3, 5 to get 8 and so on.
there are a few common profiles like -Mountains-, sandwiches (for example 535) and so on who repeat themselves which makes it easier over time.
I just realized it's not at all less complicated, but in my head it makes total sense.

I have seen this BS in everything there is to learn, Chinese characters, numbers, programming, etc. Like, sometimes it works but sometimes things are just to complex or to big to have them boxed In a picture and letter as a reference to the actual information you are trying to remember.
I rather group the 100 digits of pi in groups of 10 and memorize the pairs in each group of 10 than having to look for an image and a letter to associate the numbers with. Like, even if I take a little bit longer, doing what this guy is saying is so much stressful, not worth it. Sheesh

Happy with the memory palace side of things. However, you could remember 120 digits of PI (meaning the numbers after the 3 POINT) by using far fewer Loci in your memory palace, namely 20 by using a PAO system that puts 6 digits in per Loci. A Dominic system of 100 characters 00-99 is a better tool to use than the major system in my opinion but if the Major System is preferred then a cast again of 100 characters using the Major Code can also be transcribed into a Person-Action-Object system too!

I can remember any 100 radom numbers just by reading it out loud. It took me 1h to remember. But yeah, it's still way faster and easier than using his technique.
Why do we have to remember a lot more things just to remember one thing? It takes a lot of efforts and time consuming. And one more thing, you can not use his technique to remember many different things, because your house (mind palace) is not enough.

so what you're telling me is like this:
how to tie a shoelace
1. correspond each centimeter of shoelace to a consonant
2. memorize the action yourself
3. describe the action of tying a shoelace using only random consonants
4. boom there you go

Memorizing isn't the problem, being able to understand what we already know - is the problem.
. if people actually undestand what they know, they'll get a lot farther than being able to memorize tons of information that they understand very little about.

What happens when you forget what you made up in your imaginary house?
-It got this. Let's see, Abraham Lincoln was eating ice cream on a unicycle, and.
.
. DAMNIT! Now how am I suppose to recall the polyatomic ions? -

I remembered it in 1 day of binge watching it on summer break.
Breh i just remembered the song
binge watch it!
cmon' this is complicated
3. 14159265358979323. i can't do it anymore-

reply

Or you can memorize it by creating a difference between each number. After the first 10 minutes, you already would remember more than 30% of this.
reply

okay. let's say you try memorizing at least the first 200 openings, middle and end game positions in chess, you could be a GM instead.
