Researchers at Newcastle University, UK have been studying stereoscopic vision in praying mantises by having them wear tiny 3D glasses. WIRED's Matt Simon talks with Jenny Read, a vision scientist who led the research, about how their vision compares with humans and what that means for machine vision. A thing that popped into my mind was photogrammetry, which allows the creation of a 3D model of a stationary object by moving a camera around it. Is the perception of stereoscopic images by motion in any way similar or analogue to this? If so, we may have some groundwork already laid out for this new approach to 3D vision. Thoughts?

Actually humans are able to perceive stereovision like the matids as well, using movement, i have strabismus and i am 100% positive this is how i perceive it. When im ina moving car for example, i can perceive it perfectly; also when im moving my head slightly. If i try to see a static scene, i perceive no depth.

Does this mean that mantids sway not to -look like a twig-, but in order to apply movement to their surroundings, and that way be able to see it in stereo, while standing still in a still environment would not give them stereoscopic vision?

We took the memories of the first mantis to ever watch a 3D movie. Having captured that moment, we ran it on a loop for the mantis's mind. And the chemical that its brain produces is the flavour that makes our Mantis Bar the best.

Im confused. am I actually watching a video about praying mantises wearing 3D glasses? I-m also a tiny bit high right now. my brain just can-t comprehend what-s going on

I don't understand why this area of research is only recently being explored. No one had ever just plugged in two cameras to a PC and just tried this?

I dont trust his nodding. I dont trust it at all. Who actually nods like that? What is he thinking about? If I saw him do that in person I would run

4: 25 -you see, we display images of Justin Bieber, and it seems as though all creatures, human and animal alike, are repulsed by such pictures-

I've never laughed so much with scientific experiments. They're so stinking cute, I'm putting normal sunglasses on my mantis tomorrow.

a very weird set of incredibly short questions for a researcher who seemed to be MORE than willing to have a more complete dialog.
