HOK's Peter Ruggiero redesigns airports for a living. As an airport architect, Peter helped put together the plan to improve New York's most notorious airport, LaGuardia Airport. So what actually goes into optimizing the design of an airport terminal? Peter guides us through all the aspects of design that are incorporated into modern airports

Doesn-t change the fact that la guardia isn-t able to put in more runways. That-s the real problem. More airplanes at gates equates to longer departure times due to congestion and lines of aircraft departing and arriving. Denver-s doing the same thing. Taxi times increased 10-15 minutes due to increased gate numbers. Also, you-re limited by number aircraft per airspace due to air traffic control separatiom. So the result is a worse problem of delays due to congestion. New York airspace isn-t going to see any less air traffic in the further.

All airports are sterile, soulless, modern architecture monstrosities, at least all the airports I-ve ever seen, which is dozens. Back in the days when some care was taken to make things look nice, and also like they belong to a particular time and place, there were some beautiful old train stations. I don-t see why that couldn-t be done for airports. They should be less like shopping malls or office blocks and more like cathedrals, temples, or grand civic buildings.

One big problem I see in US airports that does NOT exist elsewhere is the lack of a sterile (post-security) transfer area. If you have to transfer planes in the US, it usually involves exiting security and then lining up all over again at another -finger- due to the separated airsides.
I believe this new configuration enables sterile transfers, and that sterile transfers become more available across the US.

1: 00 So this what Mr. Biden comparison this to a -third world country-. My major international airport literally have this Linear design, flown to Singapore airport before and I can see my country is far behind as you see this a regional airport rather than international. Atleast now we about to have Long Thanh Airport in 2025 which kinda replace the old airport death right in the center of the city.

This was great video but regarding the future design of LaGuardia I was expecting a lot more tbh, considering that it's the airport of New York. It's a great design but seems rather modest compared to the Daxing (Beijing) or Changi (Singapore) airports, both in design and especially in size (it doesn't look that big to accomodate the reported number of passengers, or maybe it's just an illusion)-)

9: 00 Security should be right there at check. There should be one security agent, metal detector and recovery seating area behind every individual airline check-in agent. The most stressful minutes should be located together. Weight check your bags, get your ticket and check your junk together within 5 paces and 5 minutes of each other.

Basically updating to a design that is about 20 years old at this point. Modern airports in Asia have already been doing this satellite, finger, walk a billion miles to get to the gate with concourse full of shops to sell stuff to passengers, island kiosks design and funnel security checks for decades

Given the factors for the -Ideal Layout-, I would say that NAIA Terminal 3 has a good layout. It has an island type of check-in counters, spacious waiting area, signs are easy to understand, it is self navigating. I just wish that they would offer more seats for passengers in the waiting area.

I think this just shows that some terminals, like the ones at Dulles (the iconic Eero Saarinen-designed one) or Tampa (also 50 years old while the airsides were completely rebuilt, never age at all, while others, like the one at LaGuardia, do.

It really looks amazing now! I didn't know it had been remodeled and when I showed up back in November I was shocked at how nice it was! Nothing like the old one. I would love to travel through airports with this guy lol
