Biologist Thor Hanson is back to answer even more of the internet's burning questions about biology. What even are murder hornets? Do female mammals get monthly periods? Is it possible to bring back extinct species? Is coral really an animal? Thor

-Wired, Thor, do murder hornets ever target and use small vertebrates as food for their larvae? #AskingForAFriend (lol)
If so, could they be used as a solution to infestations of foreign invasive rats on isolated islands, or would using them thusly be as disastrous as using Japanese beetles for kudzu (U. S, or cane toads for insect infestations (Australia? I would hate to see them decimate local endemic Native colonial bees and ants, leaving the rats untouched.

The thing about preserving animals that are about to go extinct is that are these creatures even 'meant' to survive? Lots of them are endangered because they survive on very specific foods or that they are simple losers (take the 'nose monkeys' as a reference. The mammoths could survive somehow, but most of them probably went instinct because they couldn't adapt.
99. 99% of all species that ever existed are now extinct.

if mutations are random then why would you expect them to trend toward something that benefits an organism? why isn't it equally as likely that they cause the organism to completely die out due to overwhelming negative mutations?
Mutation! = adaptation
for the reason stated: they are random

2: 30 why dont humans reabsorb
seems like a lot of asted nutrients
+ smelling of blood while predators where around couldnt have been good back when living in caves was still a thing
what is the evolutionary benefit?

reply

he didnt say so in the video but condors and vultures are really important to the enviroment, their stomachs can digest nearly anything and are extremely acidic. they clean up alot of dead animals and keep the world safer

I like this dude he has -gather around the campfire- vibes. If my biology teachers had been like this guy i might even have become a biologist but my teachers were all dead inside xD

Nobody:
Humans: Let's capture animals and force them to breed.
The Animal: I will liv0e the rest of my life in this cage for the continuation of my species. -dies-

Ling cod males are smaller. they predate on each other as a species but the much larger females especially eat the males more regularly while watching their eggs

The person that doesn-t understand coral is the same person that-s not going to understand more than half of the words you just used. -

It took me ages to figure it out why he sounded familiar, but I finally realized--he sounds like (or at least talks like) Casey Kasem!
