PERSUASION by Jane Austen - FULL audiobook. I can't help but think that Anne Elliot at nineteen (almost past marriageable age) was an untrustworthy shallow woman. She did not even have the courage to maintain a semblance of the engagement with Frederick Wentworth. A man of Wentworth's spirit would have spurned her for the weak character she was, and and would know that she would not change with time. Never being able to be depended upon to maintain the loyalty required in a woman within a Regency marriage. He certainly deserved a more obedient woman for a wife, and in those days would have found no difficulty in gaining one within nine years. People don't change their basic personalllity and Anne would remain the vacillating character she had always been. Also, I didn't notice any apology or regret on her behalf

Of course, the book is better than the movie. Got all the details that were missed and clarification of Mr. Elliott's and Mrs. Clay's ambitions and relationship. The best part was the total irony of the trick played on Sir Walter and Miss E. Elliott. Their snooty disdane for Anne was thrown in their faces when the people they preferred over their own family played them where everyone could see it. Pride goes before destruction.

Anne was bullied all her life by her obnoxious father and sister Elizabeth and dear little Mary was a parasite. Add the wonderful Lady Russell to the mix, and Anne didn't have a chance. Very gentle people are intimidated by the overbearing. Wentworth would stop the nonsense!

Ms Savage, I have always been turned off by Jane Austin and George Eliot, and other classic female writers, so I spent all my years reading Dickens, Wells, Doyle etc. Now hearing you read them I see what I robbed myself of as a result of my prejudice.

Hmmm. how would a marriage between Sir Walter and Mrs Clay 'threaten' Mr Eliot's presumptive baronetcy Is the implication that the marriage might produce a more immediate heir Or would she retain the baronetcy on his death

Pronunciation of Trafalgar enquiry and wentworth sound strange to my ears. The breakneck pace of the narration leaves little room for nuance nor emotion. Just my humble opinion. Perfect for many, I’m sure.

From Bride of Cobb:
For years I wonder why this was my favorite Austin book, and then it hit me: Anne hardly speaks 50 lines. The whole of the plot is driven by Anne's secret musings. Brilliant!

No film adaptation can match the richness of Austen's writing. but 1995 film version with Amanda Root comes closest to the mood and feeling of the book. Loved that version!

Always in admiration of Mr. Elliot following up on his first plot and stealing away Mrs. Clay in a manner that Sir Walter is unlikely to recover from quickly.

Listening to this, for the first time it occurs to me how young Louisa is when she insists she wants to be jumped down. She's really quite a normal teen.

I have never been able to read Jane Austen, and Karen Savage's reading is making ALL the difference between my being able to follow it.

I think I've finally figured it out. Ms. Savage seems to have what is/was called a mid-Atlantic accent. She sounds like Grace Kelly.

Did anyone start reading all of Jane Austen’s Novels after reading Pride and Prejudice Like one book got me started!
reply

Maybe because I'm not a native english speaker, I find this reading too fast. I miss the melody of the writing.

Unlike others I think the narrator is verrrry baaad. ike she is reading a circular of the ministry of defence!
