Marlon Brando defined what actors now call acting. He wasn't afraid to bare his soul on camera and just let loose. His style of training albeit only a year, was the actor is in charge of his or her performance. He felt learning lines of dialogue was to redundant and hindered the actors ability to give a natural, realistic, performance. Unfortunately, his disdain for the show -business- side of it all ruined his desire for acting. He used & often abused the very system that he felt used & abused not only him, but that of how minorities are portrayed on film. He was woke decades before it was a thing. Like most in show business, he developed a -brat-like- attitude towards filmmakers, co-stars, & producers. He could have been an inspiration for generations to come but understand he didn't think of acting, or as he called it lying, as a respected trade for an adult male.
He hated talking about his movies and felt the time should be spent discussing treatment of minorities in Hollywood.

When I saw Brando in One-Eyed Jacks at 14 years old, I walked home from the theater almost in a trance. I had seen many movies and good actors before, but I had never seen a performance like he gave in that movie. I went to see all the movies he made before Jacks (which he also directed. I won't say much more except that your video left out other great movies and performances: his first time on film, The Men; Viva Zapata! should be in the top 10; Teahouse of the August Moon; The Young Lions, where he plays a WWII German officer, German accent accent and all, and Free Money,
in which he uses a Swedish accent. The most brilliant American actor of all time! -

I think Marlon Brando is one of the most over rated actors ever. I just don't see why people think he's one of the best actors. he's just not believable in his roles IMO. Maybe bc he comes from an era where acting was -over acted- and overly dramatic, which is why i dont like old movies from anytime before the 70's, mainly the 80's. I just never saw what the big deal was with him, like, at all. I think he was pretty good in Apocalypse Now and The Godfather, thats mainly it for me.

I think he's a tad overrated. His movies are rarely played on TV apart from the god father. A contemporary Paul newman made way better movies and the classics he made are always being played on TV. Those early movies brando made are very dated.
Not a popular opinion but an honest one.

The last actor to revolutionize and truly change acting was Marlon Brando, you can literally divide the way people act in movies pre and post Brando, before him everyone out on these fake movie accents and nobody acted like a real person, Brando brought realism to the screen

Can't believe only one comment here mentioned -On The Waterfront-! This film is IMHO two things: Brando's greatest performance, and one of the greatest films ever made, period!
reply

Some of the obvious essential films are in the list-but Superman? Guys and Dolls? The Score? No way-. Dry White season, Viva Zappata, Burn
to mention a few superior films

Funny how he looks so much younger in 1972-s Godfather than in 1944-s Don Juan DeMarco. Also, apparently Johnny Depp IS a vampire if he-s been alive that long-
reply

Thank you!
There's a little mistake in this video though. Don Juan DeMarco is for 1994 but you said it's for 1944.
Still. thank You!

reply

James Mason was much better in Julius Caesar. Brando's performance was mostly a novelty. Mason's performance was true acting.
reply

I had no idea -Don Juan DeMarco- was a period piece. Amazing how such a romantic film could come out in the middle of WWII.

One-eyed Jacks is ALSO one of my favorite Marlon Brando flicks. A late 1950s classic western also starring Karl Malden.
