Rome HBO is my favorite Rome inspired show by miles, for (2005-2007) they made due with very little and the plot is insanely engaging.
Spartacus Season 1 was sick because of Spartacus himself only, Andrew Whitfield (R. I. P) was just perfect fit for Spartacus, he just didn't care and had no feelings/emotions other than revenge and blood, I watched Season 2 Episode 1, whole different story with the new guy, he was all smiles left and right couldn't finish Episode 1, just didn't feel right.
Barbarians started slow, but once the plot revealed itself, I enjoyed the crap out of it, and hopefully we get the much desired 3rd season, I am really waiting for it.
Can't speak for the rest, since I am yet to watch the others.

HBO's ROME despite it's high budget was one of the worst TV series I've ever seen. It degraded real historical people, showing incestuous relationships (Octavian with his mother and sister) that never happened, and showing one of the main characters kill his own family. It portrayed Antony is an extremely degrading way, as a disgustingly vulgar man. Whoever wrote it must really hate Romans. BRITANNIA was likewise horrible, degrading to Celtic people and sickening to watch.
The SPARTACUS TV series was at least very entertaining, and BARBARIANS was very good and relatively historically accurate.

I Claudius with Derek Jacobi as Emperor Claudius, Sian Philips as Augustus's wife Livia and many more great names of British theatre. It was a series about the plots and intrigues of the Imperial family. From Augustus through Tiberius, Caligula and finally Claudius. Claudius is actually the narater and his story goes from his boyhood through his life as Emperor. It was small scale, taking place mostly inside the palace. But the script and story were absolutely riveting. Such rich characters and complex and terrifying.

Saw -I Claudius- as a young boy when it first aired. Blew me away. Saw it as an adult years later, still blew me away. Showed it to lots of people who never heard of it, blew them away as well. :-) British acting at its pinnacle. Unsurpassed. Had a very young John Hurt as Caligula, he was absolutely terrifying. The big price however goes to Sian Philips as Livia. -When I start forgetting things you may light my funeral pyre and put me on it. - Totally unforgetable. Had the best theme tune as well.

I have seen all the web series which were really magnificent and intriguing but the web series like Britannia I have never ever watched in my whole life one of the most annoying show that made me puke with no story, poor screen play worst to it was the performances all together it was a bundle of garbage show only dialogue i could hear in the series was -you are the chosen one- they have used it for more than 1000 times which made me sick fuelled by slow motion sequences

I wan't really interested in I claudius UNTIL i watched Domina. It gave me more of an idea of who I was watching In I claudius. On the last episode atm and GOD DAMN its such a good show. Caligula was bonkers. Basically a continuation of HBO's rome, but a little less extravagant.

ROME by HBO is undoubtedly the greatest show of all time in its genre. Till this day i-ve been rewatching it and never even tried to count how many times because it always feels as if I am watching it for the first time. It is deeply upsetting that a show like this had to be cancelled.

Finished Rome last week in few days after finding it and I-m so sad that it only lasted two seasons I mean I-m literally devastated that it ended so quickly I don-t even want to watch any other show at the moment I just wish they continued this

Cancelling ROME was the biggest tragedy of modern television. Words do not do this show justice. If you haven't watched I implore you to make time for it. You will NOT be disappointed.

Despite historical errors, Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) and Gladiator (Russell Crowe) should at least be honorable mentions. And let's not forget Monty Python's Life of Brian!

This video was made before it aired, but Domina would have easily been in the top 10. It follows Livia Drusilla and Augustus, and is one of the best series ever imo

Spartacus was too much -blood and sperm- for my taste. Barbarians was way better (I would have rated it 4th or 3rd. And Rome is of course a masterpiece.

7: 35 obviously Claudius didn't reign from 24 BC to AD 54. Augustus was still pretty young in 24 BC and would reign for decades more.

Romulus seies is by far the BEST historical series. I highly recommend it! There are subtitles but it's so worth it. Produced by ITV Italia.

Kinda wish Gladiator had been on here too. Maybe not 100% accurate, but showed how mad some of Rome-s Caesers could become

I enjoyed the crap out of the original -Ben Hur- with Carlton Heston. What a great movie. I never saw the remake.

7: 35 Claudius could not have begun his reign in 24 BC, as he wasn't even born until 10 BC. His reign began in 41 AD.

Plebs was a waste of a spot, seriously a comedy makes the list?
And Barbarians a German series?
Yikes.

The cast couldn't get their heads into I Claudius, the director took the cast to see The Godfather.
