1. Dances With Wolves - Seminal; 2. Killers of the Flower Moon; 3. Last of the Mohicans; 4. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. I always expected and so want a sequel to DWW. The screenplay adaption of the excellent NY Times bestseller book of -Empire of the Summer Moon- (Comanches) has to become a seminal movie one of these days. Leo DiCaprio has made excellent historical documentaries of the West and the genocide of Native American tribes by the evil President Andrew Jackson - Indian killer! While Davy Crocket was not a John Dunbar, Crockett did rebel against the evil Jackson after the Massacre of Tallashatchee which was as not as bad as the evil Jackson created Indian Relocation Act. Total genocide.

I thought Geronimo an American Legend was a really good movie, followed by Dances with Wolves, both were really well done, telling the story and history of Native Americans, but like most Native American movies they at time seem to make the Native Americans out to be the worst people on earth, when they were far from that, they had a very magical culture and lifestyle that even in today's modern world doesn't come close, as Wes Studi said in the movie Geronimo an American Legend, many bad things happen in war from both sides, what's really sad is that we all could have found a way to live in peace and harmony, with each other, there was and always has been enough land for everybody.

The Dwolves scene that I found depressing was when the indian chief holds up a helmet of some European soldier and says something about it being a trophy of his great great grandfather or something. These people did not progress in hundreds of years. Probably lived in the same tee pees. Doing the same thing day after day after day. Oh sure. The very occasional war with another tribe. Raping, pillaging, taking SLAVES. Buffalo hunts of killing hundreds of buffalo, taking only what they needed and leaving the carcasses to rot so as to let other tribes to starve. Did I mention they took SLAVES? What kind of life is that? One with nature? Yeah, right.

This is not so much a top 5 of Native American movies as it is a list of white heroes facing moral adversity that happen to have Native American plot motivators. As a Native I would rather Smoke Signals, Pow Wow Highway, Wind Talkers, Apocalypto, and finally Last of His Tribe as these at least attempt to put the viewer into the shoes of the indigenous protagonists. While it might be argued that Last of the Mohicans had a Native protagonist, I would contend, on my reservation, no one was rooting for Daniel Day Lewis.

My top (5) are: 1. Dances With Wolves, 2. Last of the Mohicans, 3. Last of the Dogmen, 4 Legends of the Fall, 5. Windtalkers. Best movies ever. Watched each one more times than I care to admit(Also, LOVED Indian in the Cupboard & Jeremiah Johnson) And can't forget The Last Samurai, though obviously not Native American, but Japanese traditional warriors.

The film -Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner- won awards for best film, best director, best actor and best actress at the 2002 American Indian Film Festival. It also received The Camera d'Or from the Cannes Film Festival, along with a plethora of other prestigious accolades. Roger Ebert called it -passion filtered through ritual and memory- and gave it 4 stars.

I think one short movie that no one has put down was narrated by the great late Richard Boone. It was called Conquista. It was only about 25 minutes long but it was about when the first Indian came up on the first horse. it really did a good job portraying that one day when they first met and explained really well how it changed the Indians culture.

I don't think 5 movies is a fair number; there should be more. I once saw a movie called Stolen Women, Captive Hearts with Michael Greyeyes and Rodney Grant that was wonderful. And what about Last of the Dogmen with Tom Berenger? Renegades with Lou Diamond Phillips and Kieffer Sutherland? I think you just limited your list.

Now this is a terrible choice. No Geronimo, No Apache, No Little Big Man, No White Feather and, worst of all, No Cheyenne Autumn-
There are plenty of others far superior, possibly apart from Dances, to this posters choices.
I certainly won-t be subscribing to this Chanel.
I wonder what the excuse is.

I'd love to see one on stand Waite and the Cherokee braves, about the 5 tribes of the Confederacy. But told by a historian, and not a Hollywood opinion piece. This would actually make a great movie since his regiment was the last Confederates to surrender, made up of Cherokee, Muskogee, and Seminole.

The person who came up with this list aint Indigenous. Movies about settlers who interacted with Indigenous people is not a Native American movie. And yeah, I loved though movies especially -Last of the Mohicans-.
Smoke Signals
Prey
Reel Injun
Apocalypto
Cheyanne Autumn

Wow! I can't believe this list promotes itself as -Native American. - These are films are Euro-American stories with Natives either villainized or romanticized. Native American films are -Smoke Signals, - -Powwow Highway, - the current show -Reservation Dogs. -
reply

Black Robe, Pow-wow Highway, Smoke Signals, Fast Runner, & the one about the grandfather telling his grandson the stories of their people. Apocalypto I suppose. A fantastic study of Natives in 120 years of Hollywood -Reel Injun- made by a Northern Cree fellow
reply

All great pictures, but you missed a few. Last of the dogmen should really be in there. Little big man is one that could also fall in that group. The last one would be Geronimo with Jason Patrick and Matt Damon. Wes studied was excellent in it.

All these movies suck white people always raping Indian woman or killing Indian men white people were not this strong AT ALL their numbers in population drained so bad they were forced too bring in slaves an immigrants to fight natives
reply

Basically, anything with Wes Studi. But you left out Smoke Signals, without which, this list is meaningless. These movies are mostly about white people -encountering- indigenous people and, of course, violence. Feh.
reply

Although I have enjoyed watching these movies, none of them were written, produced or directed by Native folks. I hope you can feature actual Native American movies in the next batch.
reply

What about Smoke Signals? An all native cast with an entirely native perspective. Not saying these other movies are bad but Smoke Signals written by the great Sherman Alexi.
reply

War party, u forgot that one too, powwow highway, dreamkeeper, once were warriors. Man, there are so many u missed in native movies. Do more research b4 u do the top 5 again.
reply

If you-re looking for true authentic First Nations movie check out fast runner. It may not make this list though because it-s Canadian. Also black robe is another good one.
reply

Pretty good list, everyone has their own opinions of course. All I -might- change is throwing Jeremiah Johnson up a notch but not a bad list at all. All good flicks.
reply

I absolutely loved Dances With Wolves. It was the first move I saw the nobility of spirit of the Lakota Sioux, and, more importantly, what we all have in common.
reply

Hi I'm searching for an old western where the hero was called Bushrock. I've tried looking everywhere but nothing. Really appreciate if anyone knows.
reply

Agree with Last of the Mohicans, W ind River but Stolen Women, Captured hearts was wonderful and so romantic. Michael Greyeyes was gorgeous.
reply

The last of the Mohicans is my favourite movie of all time. Have watched it dozens of times. Brilliant story line, acting and music.
reply

Dance Me Outside Education of Little Tree. I love Graham Greene, Tantoo Cardinal, Adam Beach, Wes Studi. Almost forgot Thunderheart --
reply

Soldier Blue should be on this list. It was the FIRST American Indian movie to show what happened to the peoples. Starring Candice Bergman.
reply

Sorry but 'dreamkeeper' is the best: all native actors and their myths of different tribes.
This is really autentic
