From slavery to the civil rights movement to Get Out, it's been a long journey. Nicole: I'm so curious how much power black directors in the 70's had. They obviously still had a little bit of propaganda/ bad stereotypes in those movies- were those all implemented by overseeing white people? Or did black directors have to find some balance of not scaring away racist white people while also exposing them to their culture and the realities not the stereotypes?

Tananarive Due the woman in this video created the book The Good House. She knows what she is talking about and what makes a good book.
That book was the very first I read in Black Horror and supernatural fiction. That book was genuinely terrifying AND WORTH THE READ.
GO READ IT.
The Good House by Tananarive Due.

Interesting is the development of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It starts as a more or less pure white serial, but later includes importent non-white characters, as an African, am Afroamerican and Chinese slayer and an Principal Wood, who developes into a central character.

What about the movie Bones? It's a Black horror movie with Snoop Dogg as the main character. Bones was directed by Ernest Dickerson, who is also Black, and the movie is an homage to blaxploitation films of the 1970s and incorporates numerous elements from the genre.

The first horror movie that I saw where a black character survived to the end was John Carpenter's The Thing. That film is one of my favorite films of all time as well as one of the greatest horror films of all time. JC got a lifetime hood pass for The Thing IMHO.

One of my favorite black characters in a horror film was Loretta Devine's Resse Wilson from Urban Legend and it's sequel. While she does fall into the stereotype of that time, I don't think I would have enjoyed those movies without her being in the movies.

Would love to see black historical movies that doesn't involve racism, something that tells us about great African culture & kingdoms not centered around ancient Egypt, we have aplenty of those but unfortunately from other cultures point of view.

I'd love to hear her talk about Serpent and the Rainbow and voodooism in film. Also Alfre Woodard's character in Annabelle because she sacrificed herself in it, and it's a fairly recent movie.
