I remember seeing an older version of The Cold Equation of which this is an adaption. There was a 1984 movie of that name and another Twilight Zone from 1986. These all follow the basic story from the early 1950's with the weight problem being the issue. The version I remember had the young woman being the girlfriend of the pilot which made the choices much more personal and the main issue was the craft only had enough oxygen for one person plus a small surplus of 25 or 30%. not near enough for two people. This made the scenario much more believable. The vaccine was meant for a colony planet with millions of doomed people who would die without it. I haven't been able to find that version but I'm glad Dust has brought around another excellent version.

No ship of any type that I have heard of only has enough fuel to get to destination. They always carry at least 20% more. Yet in the cases of superb Sci Fi short stories, these type events were the norm back in 197080s era. Heinlein was king, yet Zelasney, E. E. Doc smith, even Sir Isaac Asimov amongst others wrote similarly odd stories that caught our imagination. Nice to see a short story rather than just read and use imagination. (Doc Smith would take 1. 5 pages to describe two spaceships shooting laser beams at each other in pyrotechnical delights)

I mean it was great acting in very well executed ship like that could carry an extra hundred pounds. I’m sure the girl did not way more than that! I just find it a little far-fetched that they had to do what they did! look what kind of space vehicles are these that can’t carry an extra hundred pounds I just find it disturbing Perhaps they should make better spaceships in cases like this I mean let’s be real people Wouldn’t wanna be caught dead is it organization that makes spaceships like that.

So, let's see if I've got this right. There's a space ship that must deliver life-saving medicine. and the mission planners don't take into account any contingencies. They know the exact mass of the spaceship, and the cargo, and the pilot, and they measure the exact amount of fuel into the tanks. Yeah, right! Furthermore, their security is so lax that they allow someone to sneak on-board. Okay, right.
And we're expected to take this rubbish seriously

This is a nice remake of The Cold Equations. The Cold Equations is a science fiction short story by American writer Tom Godwin, first published in Astounding Magazine in August 1954. There have been many adaptations from a recent CBC radio play to Ray Bradburry Theatre 36 years back all the way to X Minus One in 1954 on NBC radio. Please do not claim this is your work. It is derivative and a lovely retelling - but Tell the Truth!

That's odd -- I remember the original story and the TZ episode ending with the pilot sacrificing himself so the girl can survive, and I remember being really angry at him because of it.
But I just checked, and both end the same as this short. I HATE man sacrifices himself for woman stories, so I can't imagine why my memory would edit itself that way.

When watching shorts like these I found that I can never really know what's going to happen in the end but in a good way they certainly do not always end well but it's really good for movie and story quality. The story that does not end well has equal or greater quality as one that does end well. If every story ended well they wouldn't be worth watching anymore

This was certainly a sad and painful movie short but a touching and moving one as well. The acting was excellent and I was hoping that she would be allowed to continue aboard the transport because someone found a solution to the fuel problem. I never know what to expect from Dust except incredibly good stories and acting. Like this one.

I found the ending quite satisfying. A welcome change from the standard plot where the rebellious teen does what s/he was told not to and jeopardizes everybody else, but gee that's OK. even though one or two other people die as a result. Not in this case.

No space suits No eject pods I thought people would learn something after the Titanic. But seeing that the caption of the ship was a replicant of some kind as he said he was engineered Seems like this makes sense. Good moral of the story however.
reply

Great storyline but space equals almost zero mass and weight. Basic fundamentals were obviously pushed aside for views and revenues! If you're going to do it, please get it right and close to believable as this one failed rather quickly
reply

I was gonna ask why would you design a ship with a finite amount of fuel and no room for error. Then I answered my own question, you wouldn't want anyone on that planet to have a way of getting off world and spreading a disease.
reply

Wow. Very nicely done. I remember listening to The Cold Equations on an old time radio program. I don't remember there being a bracelet, so if this was added, it was an excellent touch. Nice job!
reply

Wow. But let’s be honest - the additional weight of a 90lb girl wouldn’t cause a weight imbalance so extreme that the ship would crash. But I’m not a rocket scientist so what the hell do I know.

Why does this video have the same seating arrangement as CONTACT with Jodie foster Her seat was vertically attached, this on bottom attachment. Hers was NOT prescribed but put in, and it failed!

This is a decent portrayal of how ignorant and selfish young modern girls are. I hope this far in the future modern young women aren't as ignorant as they are today. This short film suggests that they are.
reply

I got really hung up on the fact that engineers that have nailed interstellar travel didn't work in a margin for fuel consumption, what happens if they had an emergency enroute stranded in deep space
reply

Ouch. This one touched me on a level I can't explain. Well done to all involved. I am just happy this is a story and not real. (Although the actors and the production makes it feel all too real)
reply

I love this film, but am frustrated that they've made it inaccessible to deaf/HoH. Last year, it was available with captions. Now the captions have been removed. Why do that
reply

Ok, I am at 6: 04. If dude doesn't take a walk to save the child then I don't want to be in this future.
EDIT: Nope. I don't need more grimdark. We have plenty already, thanks.

COMPUTER. how much lead time to shut engines down for braking with an extra 50kg on board. make it so. they always put a little extra fuel on these machines just in case.
reply

When this story has been told in the past, there is a desperate sequence where the two rip out everything non-essential from the inside of the ship but it's never enough.
reply

could have amputated her legs and take off all the clothes/shoes, and the guy could amputate one of his legs. well i guess they can die from the limbs being cutoff. oh well.
reply

Copy or remake of a X-minus 1 radio drama or maybe CBS radio mystery theater from 50 years ago. I know I just listened to it a few days ago and it's nearly identical,
reply

I find it hard that any ship doesn’t have enough fuel for the small margin of error that is the weight of a small child. Like only a few dozen kilograms Cmon.
reply

I love this. As an old, hard of hearing person, I would appreciate either auto-generated captions or include a transcript in the notes.
reply

i like the lively yellow interior. the chair, not a lot.
like a bug on the windshield,
she wont have the guts to do that again.

reply

This was a GREAT, gut punch of a short story. I read it decades ago, but it's not one that you can forget. Outstanding adaptation!
reply

The ACTUAL definition of Hobson's Choice . Heart-wrenching. Beautifully made Short. The Young Lady is a terrific actor.
reply

Ouch. That was gut-wrenching.
(Science: any craft can lose the 45kg that girl weighed. The only question is oxygen and food)

reply

I'm not sure about the acting performances here, they do not seem very convincing. But it is a difficult theme for sure.
reply

Very sad and shows how humans can make sacrifices when it's for the better. 1 life to save thousands. Still sad.
reply

Finally a ship with a good cockpit where the pilot is not using handle controls like now hundreds of years before.
reply

I hope that planet has an atmosphere because I would hate for someone to find her remains embedded in the ground.
reply

Thumbs down! No way a few extra pounds could make any difference. Research the true FLAT earth TOPIC now!
