If you were forced to flee your own war-ridden country, would you sacrifice what makes you human to survive How to be Human by Bruno Centofanti More About How To Be Human: In a world where artificial intelligence has dismantled the human contribution, Adelphe (Scottish BAFTA-winner, Sophie Kennedy Clark) has to help her sister Kimi (Louise Salter) to lose her humanity. Moreover, Kimi has to forget how to be human in order to fully disguise herself as an AI and survive in the only liveable place, Cold City. As they embark on this crossing, Kimi is forced to confront situations that put her sister, and her manufactured intuition, to the test. We learn through this unique perspective as we watch the two sisters pursue safety and refuge, made possible by the help and support of Maria (Les Misérables, Tony-award winner, Frances Ruffelle. In a world where the migration of displaced people is so present, this story reminds us of how being born in the right place and the right time can so often lead us to take our freedom and basic rights for granted. Filmmaker's Statement: As a highly passionate director and producer, I love to discover and tell stories. Storytelling is very much what drives me. My niche is in finding the surprising truth in human stories, to inspire people and to put them in touch with their humanity. I’ve been privileged as a film director to work with a wide and diverse spectrum of artists and subjects. I’ve traveled the world, freely immersing myself in societies, breaking barriers of class and culture. Being the grandson of a Jewish immigrant who buried her past in order to survive and only discovering my own roots later in life, the idea of telling the story of a young girl who needs to hide her identity in order to survive, feels personal, powerful and inspiring to me. How to be Human is a visually compelling story that has many parallels with society today. It shows a dystopian society where humans have been superseded by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the survival of human identity relies on the dangerous crossing to an uncertain future. The Crossing is a pilgrimage where Kimi is forced to leave behind her memories, her experiences and her identity; in the hope that on the other side, things will be better. Will the crossing save her Has Human freedom and love been lost forever This is a vivid and relevant story for our times. In a world where the migration of displaced people is so present, this story reminds us of how being born in the right place and the right time can so often lead us to take our freedom and basic rights for granted. Intimate, poetic and life affirming, this isn’t just an incredible story of determination against all odds; we are exploring the precious and delicate nature of human existence and the values that make us who we are. Our aim is to provoke in the audience a great empathy for others and help to dissolve the refugee stigma

I watched the audio description version of this that they released. It narrated more of what was in the human sister’s mind. From THAT version, I was able to clearly know the older sister was truly an Android and the younger girl was a human. Her opening line is My name is Kimmy and I’m a human. Clean, clear narration that cleans up any doubt.
At first I assumed she was an Android that had grown up around humans too long.
She even describes how Adelphi is an Android.
The title doesn’t help at all. It’s not How to Be Human. It’s how to be an Android. Yes, I’m nitpicking now. But the opposite title and lack of clarity of the characters was where this film needed more work and thought.
We don’t understand why Adelphi is offline and why she even needs to go through immigration. We don’t know how they met or why an Android like Adelphi would consider Kimmy a sister. We don’t know why the eye scanner doesn’t detect androids versus humans at immigration. We don’t know why androids would eat normal food like apples if it’s just for fuel. They would eat nutritional yeast and dry granola bars.
So she was cleaned up by the cleaner and her skin painted. Who is going to keep painting her skin
Or are emotionless humans allowed and it’s an unspoken rule
This needed to be fleshed out much more.
Yes, it’s cool. And yes I understand the general theme and storyline. But those little nuances left big holes.
Edit:
Ok, so I admit that I rarely read the description section in videos.
In this case, the much-needed synopsis was there, In a world where artificial intelligence has dismantled the human contribution, Adelphe (Scottish BAFTA-winner, Sophie Kennedy Clark) has to help her sister Kimi (Louise Salter) to lose her humanity. Moreover, Kimi has to forget how to be human in order to fully disguise herself as an Al and survive in the only liveable place, Cold City.
I have watched this short 3 times now, each time with a little more insight than the time before.
Yes, I can see now where there is enough implication that Kimi is human and Adelphi is AI.
While there are certainly still questions that remain:
why are they sisters,
why do the people mill about in Cold City,
why was there enough gas in the car,
how did Adelphi get out without a status in the first place,
Is there any implied danger, other than dwindling resources, that prevents Kimi From living outside as that family,
do the drones also come and maintain the population by killing survivors,
Why go through the hassle if apples and firewood can be found outside. (There’s half the makings for fresh apple pie, right there)
what was the purpose of the drone repainting the image on the wall And why not rebuild other areas properly
However, I am upgrading my opinion having read the description and listened to the audio version. Visually well implemented and on point acting. Consideration for diversity of cast. Great camera work.
I wish they would continue fleshing out some of those points above and I could see a longer version of this hitting more mainstream audiences.
(Thank you if you read all of this)

4: 15 I stopped watching. There is no story setup, no introduction, no nothing, but one supposedly non-human working with a human who inhumanely helps to steal a car belonging to a family. Clearly this is some form of post-apocalyptic scene. What good is survival when you've lost any compunction of humanity, civility or decency. NO, it's NOT ENJOYABLE to demonstrate inhumanity. that's on live television each and every night. Why is inhumanity entertainment Is the whole DUST thing just another euphemism for suicidal nihilists
reply

You Go back for her While you stole your way into paradise No way. Give it one week and you forgot about her, and the car you stole (possibly destroying the life of that family) and all the ruin you left in your wake to get in there. whereever that is.
You Go back for her You're too selfish for that.

Around the 225 mark, did anyone notice that neither girl is carrying the big bag. Yet when the little girl screams and the human girl runs to see what is going on, the android picks up the bag. I'm surprised no one said that in any of the comments. I didn't notice it at first either though.
reply

I'm flawed by its harrowing exploration. The story and atmosphere was so loud in the sense of telling us something so important about our own humanity and what we are doing with it! And why we are so scary and complex when compared to the very things that we fear and deem as complex.
reply

I love the irony of how it is regularly debated on whether and how androids can be human, but this poses the opposite question. It presents a society where Androids are the dominant species and humans must be taught and programmed to mimic them.

Of all the shorts I have seen lately, this HAS to be made into a full length feature! please! I will contribute what little I can. This has promise. a 'firefly' but so much more raw and full of opportunity to make great commentary!
reply

Who wouldn’t want to see more of that You know some crazy stuff would go down eventually with the chick with the mullet. Her and tattoo dude would hook up. I imagine this must be a book somewhere. I need to do some research.

Given that the Dover sea is no longer in this film, the likelihood of biological life surviving long enough to need to be screened for admittance into the city now built on the dry ocean floor is stretching credibility.
reply

i loved it but tbh was confused by some elements and actually thought it might have made more sense if the girls were androids attempting to be human rather than the other way around, especially given the title
reply

They must've finally tried the if women ran everything there'd be no more wars thing, and then after all the ruin everybody said, Okay, that's it. Next time we get a place built, no more emotions.
reply

Did I enjoy this Do I enjoy this I just don't know what's going on here. Nice pictures, no sence. I watched 10-15 movies so far. Only a few made a bit of sence to me. But mostly pretty pictures.
reply

I felt the person scanning them and the tattoo artist were not AIs but humans otherwise won't have let them pass. Or maybe emotionless humans are allowed to pass as an unspoken rule.
reply

This is where we r now. humanity is false. its greed that propels us now. stop and take a deep breath. it could very well be ur last. gr8 film. kudos to all that worked on this production.
reply

Thanks for the extra effort put into the audio-captions and everything, ijt's a great movie and I enjoy it. Creepy seeing the cliffs of Dover like that, great shot. Best wishes everyone

I keep coming back to see this one again and again. Louise Salter has huge star quality! I would like to see her dominate a major motion picture some day soon.
reply

DUST. Are you not guilty of overusing the same tropes where technology is often seen to be contributing to anything that would be antagonistical in nature
reply

Like you would leave the keys in the car in that kind of situation.
and have a hidden deadman switch
. just for back up.

reply

Gosh awfully great short film I just wish It was more. And did I say I love her hair For the record. I love her hairdo! Oh man smokin hott.
reply

I don't get it, is she a human trying to infiltrate an android camp That just seems. ridiculous.
Do they not have x-ray scanners

reply

And i thought The Vampire Dairies and The Originals were best concept and visualisation ever!
But DUST is an another level for sure.

reply

there was more of the plot revealed in the description of the video than they actually showed in the video, this one sucked
reply

That was fantastic. Well done guys. So much comes through Dust that deserves backing with big money. This one definitely does
reply

If you're a man and two girls walk up and steal your car while you're 10ft away. it's time to hand in your man card
reply

So, don't like to explain much, do ya.
Mysterious is interesting, but
total ambiguity is just damn irritating.

reply

So they went through all of that to live in a dystopian city
I think I’d take my chances on the outside.

reply

So in order to Be Human you have to learn to become an android. No wonder our kids are terminally depressed these days.
reply

why are these all so good I need to binge them together with a friend of mine who appreciates stuff like this too.
reply

Constantly linking ourselves to the internet has us well on our way to becoming cyborgs, if not androids.
reply

This was interesting, I would love to see more of the mythos of that dystopia and for the story to continue!
reply

We were delighted to be involved in this production. Well done everyone involved. Louis & the SFL team.
reply

Loved the concept! O just wish it was a proper short and not an episode.
Hopefully we get to see more.

reply

Very enjoyable and thought provocing my question is however. How is she going to go back for her
reply

The guy doing the tat knew she was human when she winced. Also what happens when she needs a dump
reply

Why can’t future be nice and beautiful on mars, instead of always some post apocalyptic dystopia
