I can't warm up to this one. There wasn't any particular logic to the dilemma posed, nor any particular logic to the pupeteers' reactions to the choices participants made. The interest in such a dilemma would naturally come from mirroring tough choices people face in real life and real societies and how they respond to them. I couldn't see this here. The (interesting) classroom set-up and the concept of The Colony did not sehd any light on, or connect with, what happened on the finaly day. The only way this could have been an interesting riddle in its own right would have been to present it as a kind of escape room scenario where it's about surviving by outsmarting others.

That was one of the most chilling, riveting, real films Dust has shown. It shows just how easy it is to manipulate the Human mind and control everyone. (Shades of 1984, )An example of the constant, overwhelming attack through all media, on the present Democratic voting practices, by manipulation of information. With accusations of lies and false voting, definitely is a powerful weapon, that plays plays into the hands of those who wish to change the system, to what More Autocratic and Despotic rule Only time will tell how strong the present system is, in withstanding the onslaught to bring in a new Dark Age of History.
reply

This is so simple. First, what have they learned as Right and Wrong and where does execution fall on that spectrum Second, what 'bad thing' did the accused do
Once that is determined, the decision is easy. Alternatively, present that the bully girl will continue to bully, control, and manipulate. She WILL be in charge, so exchange her if you need to spare the life of the accused. Lastly, you can choose to sacrifice yourself so you dont have to live with the decision.
Edit- and based on the ending, a leader must sacrifice themselves for the greater good.

Well thought provoking I guess. But it is hard to see logical consistency.
The 'leaders' surely were testing for morals of their own standards. Those standards could be any number of things.
In this case the leaders thought that self-sacrifice was the highest test of leadership character, and rewarded the person willing to die for another most worthy. And apparently anything shy of that was worthy of death.
So, whether there was a deeper message here, or even a teaching moment other than a preaching moment, is up for questioning.

Reminds me of a game called Paranoia, where a tyrannical power forces you to make choices, that could simply lead to your own death. or everyone else's. But there's also a third option, to defy the tyrannical power. break the rules. I see the kids didn't try to overpower their executioner, or make any attempt to innovate. and if they were groomed to be colony leaders, this may have been the true test, that would have saved all.

My take away: this is a very condensed form of what's already happening to our kids in school, right down to the active shooter. Notice how the lessons are just 'good' and 'bad', without explanation or context, let alone any possibility of understanding. Thus, our kids 'graduate' into adulthood confused and traumatized. The 'moral' appears to be that 'good citizens' are only good if they have been first broken. How sad.

The colors in this short are amazing and it's amazing because most of it probably was achieved with clever lighting instead on heavy color mapping. 10 for the color grading, lighting and interplay of colors - it's a real visual treat. The message is powerful too, the shots were timed nicely (no long still-standing cameras with little action. The camera work is really nice as well.

I thought the original accusation was vague. I would have asked them to explain exactly what happened, in order to make a decision. They already decided the original person was guilty, but they really didn't say why exactly. It's like saying you're guilty because I say so; and that is no reason at all. If I were to guess on the law they enacted, it would be thou shall not argue lol.
reply

Out of a system that teaches good/ bad absolutism and community in agreement is good, I figured it would be too late for selflessness. The condemned was already judged and deemed guilty by the community that was in agreement. Resistance or questioning the authority would go against the consensus of the community.
reply

Nicely done. And a brilliant concept. However, it is difficult to see how not giving up their lives for another person who has allegedly done bad. It's not much of a moral choice. It would have been better had the choice been to decide whether to give up their lives for an innocent child.

There was only a single toaster, and one piece of bread put into the toaster. They already planned on killing everyone there except one person ahead of time. Would you say that's good, or bad Or good
reply

This.
Was so boring.
Way too contrived.
Unrealistic dialog.
Super subtle metaphors. lol.
But it did have its Soviet moments.
And it's not really the actor's fault.

Now that's how short stories are done. No explanation of how we got here and no real resolution. Dive right in and catch a glimpse. Just enough to set the imagination on fire. Love it.
reply

OK, who are you and what have you done with the real DUST This movie had a start, a middle, and an end with a comprehensible plot line. Obviously a DUST counterfeit!
reply

The correct choice would have been to try and take the gun and escape. Clearly the instructors are evil and passing their test is not something to feel good about.
reply

omg. this is by far the best of the 50-100 dust episodes i have seen. And it is the only one i will really remember. Powerful. BRILLIANT. thanks.
reply

Definitely one of the better shorts on Dust. I agree with the comments below that it was nice to have an actual ending with the possibility of a part 2.
reply

That is so messed up but figuring it is about creating a utopian society where all is good then those displaying any of the deadly sins are not worthy.
reply

I like how they were brainwashed but still kept their personalities and morals. Like the training didn’t work. There will be bad and good

In the real world, Brenna would quickly make her way up the chain of management in the Corporate World, or to higher levels of political office.
reply

I know that fiction is all about suspension of disbelief but this nonsense is straining my personal disbelief beyond breaking point.
reply

This was an altar video. But there's no credit to alter in your description but it's literally right on the screen at the end. Right
reply

Thumbs down because it ended without an ending. People like completion, order, and knowledge within their Utopian mind.
reply

It's less thought provoking and more the rule of arbitrary values I really thought this would be a logical trap until the end.
reply

I enjoyed that, but had figured out how it would end, by the time the test subject came in, even so well put together!
reply

I love these shorts but it's kind of like going to a strip club, you just end up going home with blue balls.
reply

Is there a continuation of this or anything Id love to have more to this one! This was done really good!
reply

Wow! Talk about it powerful video this was awesome! Thank you and make more! This story looks like it just began!
reply

What kind of logic is this So, you choose good and others didn't do anything but only arguing should die
reply

Hmmm, quite a high attrition rate for one graduate to succeed. not sure I'd take those odds.
reply

OMG. that was the most suspenseful and totally not expected ending. thank you! You are the bomb!
reply

They are the bad ones, the ones in charge. Only one person could survive that test, that's bad.
reply

Excellent new talent.
A glimpse of what to come paired with experience.
raw. Truth

reply

too many logical flaws but since its free here i will keep watch upcoming ones too
reply

Dialogue is impossible to discern at some critical points due to overpowering gloomy music.
