Evolution of Platform Fighting Games Your information about Smash Bros N64 is an a partial lie.
Sakurai any HAL made a platform fighting game with placeholder graphics that looked like actual people fighting each other. They looked nothing like Pepsiman and were never referenced as such. Allegedly the outfoxes was an inspiration. The later prototype he did show to Nintendo had fox, Mario, DK and Samus as characters. Allegedly he did not seek permission from Nintendo he just showed up with them in the prototype. Eventually Nintendo agreed and the game was made.
The game was made in the typical and proper way. A prototype was made, to show off the game play without any theme or aesthetics. All that was added in mater once the core idea/gameplay for the game was perfected.\r\n

It's weird how Brawlhalla doesn't get much attention when it has 100 million players with 20million monthly players (crossplay. Insanely good tournament entries online and LAN, massive prize pools, consistent developer support, extremely active community. It's not nearly as recognized as Smash (it does not have the massive legacy or storied history of it, but it deserves some praise imo. It's different from Smash in basically every way but the genre. People are very quick to discount it without giving it a serious try and how good high level competitive play is. Also one of the most balanced fighting games ever.

I love how neglected Brawlout and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl are in this video. Not only does the narrator completely ignore their existence, but Brawlout's chapter name is incorrect and NASB doesn't have a chapter at all.
Also, there are so many other platform fighting games that were omitted from this list, I guess Rushdown Revolt, Indie Pogo, Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers, Duck Game, Towerfall, Shovel Knight Showdown, Stick Fight: The Game, and Flash Party just don't exist then.
Honestly, this whole entire video needs a complete remake

For the people still saying they ripped off Smash Bros, it's called a genre, you can't own a genre, it's just like all those FPS games, all of them took from Wolfenstein 3D and Doom.
Imagine if id Software patented FPS games after releasing Doom in 1993? We wouldn't have Duke Nukem 3D, GoldenEye, Half-Life, Unreal, Halo, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Bioshock.
Imagine if Chuck Berry patented Rock and Roll? We wouldn't have Elvis, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Queen, Deep Purple.

-- the actual inspiration of Smash Brothers--
That doesn-t sit right with me, look I will say that Outfoxies be the first of the Platform Fighters, but claiming as the inspiration without proof from Sakurai himself really grinds my gears.
It-s like saying Fatal Fury was made because of Street Fighter 2, but in reality Fatal Fury was actually made by part of the dev team involved in the Original Street Fighter 1.

No mention of slap city, icons, rushdown revolt, smash crusade, flash party, or the gb smash demake Dan made before rivals?
Kinda cringe bro
Also, u should've at LEAST made a offhand comment about the party/non-trad plat fighters like duck game

Dude when I was a kid a managed to unlock all characters in Battlestadium DON without knowing japanese or even having internet access, this is still one of the most impressive things i've made in my life and i was just a kid

Great video. It checked all of my boxes: from the outfoxies to all of the smash bros to brawlhalla, NASB, and Multiversus. The only game I saw missing was a Japanese game called dream mix t v world

This is such a weird script and video essay- No explanation on each game rather than some loose facts, skipped over melee, Brawlout didn-t receive any narration over it. Huh?

Bro fighting games are so cool. I wish I had Smash Bros! Melee, Brawl, Ultimate, sounds so much fun.
I've always wanted to play those games. They look so fun with friends.

I bet lot of you people also didn't know that Pokemon did NOT create the monster collecting/taming game genre (no, Shin Megami Tensei didn't do either.

Great video! Reminded me that PlayStation All-Stars is almost 10 years old at this point.
Really hope we see a sequel someday!

I always feel that brawlout is underrated. I think the lack of updates and characters is the main problem of this game.
reply

I didn-t know there were this many in the genre! That-s pretty cool! I-m here after Multiversus release and it-s really fun -
reply

-The most mechanically challenging- please, don't make Ultimate players feel good about themselves, that's just a lie
reply

-actual inspiration of Smash Bros-
Yeah no that sounds like hogwash. Pretty certain that KOF holds that honor

reply

Who told you that PlayStation all stars battle royale was going to be created by naughty dogs studios
