Bigger vs more lived-in open worlds in gaming

Open world gaming has been dominating for years. But as game worlds get bigger and bigger, are we losing out on quality? Let's talk Wi: I don't like games in which I can go everywhere right from the beginning. I want to start linear and having the world gradually open up over time. Seeing a place or knowing it exists from the beginning but not beeing able to travel there until the last quarter of the game is the most rewarding feeling that keeps me up playing and continuing the game. Therefore I was kind of disapointed with Breath of the Wild. I like the Metroidvania approach and I think the Open World should be the result that developes over time. While Open World games could benefit from this approach, games that already use the Metroidvania gameplay could benefit from Open World games by letting the areas feel more connected and open. Regarding that I have big hopes for Metroid Prime 4. This game should be Open World in the last quarter of the game but not until you have collected all abilities. Until then it should feel like a exploration game where many paths are closed, hidden or untraversable with the promise of building up to a true Open World later in the game.

Definitely quality over quantity. I've always loved open world games, and used to think bigger worlds were cool, but now it's the opposite. I get disappointed when a new game boasts a huge world cos I know it'll be like a wasteland. I did exactly what Falcon said in this vid, played Origins then Horizon Zero Dawn soon after, and altho Origins was great, HZD was just a way better world in general. Only a bit smaller but so much more lived in and genuine, probably helped by the setting

I feel like we're held back by the limits (Data And Graphics) as wel as most developers are just copying other games in one way or another, it would be more interesting and would do the world a favor if you be yourself rather than someone else, because if you're being them, whose being you? I'm not saying developers aren't making their own thing, it just seems that everyone wants to do that one thing that the one developer did to make the genre better.

I don't know how he literally show Skyrim... either he's subjective or he'as losing his mind. Skyrim is by far the best lived in world I feel like you sneak into a house when people are asleep, go anywhere you find interesting things... On the other hand WTH 3 is less of open to the player approach. By far if anyone can beat Skyrim it's definitely AC Odyssey... The world is just so open in it's approach I love that game

Im getting older, so the quality storyline, well written, combined with enjoyable gameplay has my real interest these days. So a storyline like Detroit Being Human, combined with an open world would be my ideal game. Cyberpunk i pray will reach this level, but I also understand the hardware hasn't gotten to a level where this is a viable option. Soon, i hope.

Is it just me , or does he have problems with constructing ideas?

Intro seems like it's throwing shade at Bethesda, when they're about the only company that does both. Say what you want about alllll of their problems, and there are a lot, their map and environmental storytelling are both top notch.

Petition to bring back open world games located entirely within a city. I'm fed up of these giant maps filled with nothing. We'd much rather a smaller, more detailed, realistic,M and lived map, than some massive atlas filled with Jack shit

I personally feel that the newer assassin's creed games (Origins onward) feel lived in. You feel more part of the world and immersed while also being in a huge world. They strike a good balance between the two

Recently replayed AC Unity... Which is getting a recently good reputation for a reason. Without most of the bugs, it-s a great game, and it-s really lived in. Hard to top RDR2 though...
