10 Games That ARE BETTER On Higher Difficulty Adam: Standout high difficulty game for me was Metro: Last Light on ranger mode, no question.
Ranger mode was the first and only time so far that I've encountered a game making ammunition realistically rare. So many hard difficulty games or mods claim that 'ammo is scarce' and yet realistically there's still several magazines of ammo to be easily found for every weapon, every few mins at worst. Ranger mode forcing you to play hard, linear, extended combat encounters against dozens of enemies; using nothing but 2 throwing knives, 3 low calibre pistol rounds and less than half a small mag of low calibre SMG ammo made it really feel like a simulation rather than a typical 'action hero shoots up the baddies' situation. Trying to take on 3-4 bullet sponge mutant-gorilla type creatures, in a small cave with only 2 shotgun shells and a few knives was a challenge thats stuck with me for years xD
Honourable mention to Fallout 4 survival mode as well. All those hours of travel and caution, just to step on a goddamn landmine and start the whole journey again xD

This one is about to become super topical at the end of the month, and it's Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth.
You can only recruit certain characters, access certain dungeons, and get the full/true ending on Hard Mode. It's a more compelling story that wraps up a whole host of character sub-plots, but it also paradoxically winds up becoming easier in the long run. The payouts you get from completing certain tasks are better on Hard Mode, so you'll have a team of juggernauts by the end game. Easy Mode, on the other hand, gives you a bunch of mediocre gear that will leave most players too weak to beat the game on what is supposed to be a walk in the park.
Maybe it's just quirky game design, but I like to think it all plays into the thematic undercurrent of people who find value in struggling against a hostile, overwhelming world. The reward is worth the struggle.

I'm really hoping to see the Metro series mentioned in part 2 or 3! Those games the devs said they were meant to be played in Ranger mode (and its even better in Ranger Hardcore. Tougher enemies, no hud, scarce resources for crafting, it really almost forces you to go the stealth route which is a challenge to do without being spotted, because if you're spotted good luck surviving without using almost all your resources and ammo! And not to mention the scarcity of oxygen, I died multiple times in Exodus in the last level due to running out of oxygen!

Deathmarch in Witcher 3 really was not that hard. I only played the game through once and played it on Deathmarch, and quite frankly compared to some hard difficulty levels, this was a breeze in comparison. Last of us, I played on hard on the PS3 and it was tough, but when I got the remaster I selected grounded and had no idea it was a newer difficulty added later. Now that was a hard difficulty to play. Also super tough are God of war & the two Wolfenstein reboot games.

Actually Call of Duty Infinity Warfare have some of the best and most unique specialist difficulty, you have to check the integrity of your helmet and suit through all the game, as well if you receive damage in your legs, chest, or arms that may affect your accuracy or even running speed, even you can end up firing with only 1 arm, as well you have to check you helmet because while in space if your helmet is broken you choke to dead.

I disagree about Witcher. Having it finished in Highest difficulty it's actually hard only at the beginning. Mid to late game you realize you only need to spam Quen and generally becomes very repetitive very fast. No real skill is required, no deep knowledge of the mechanics. Again, the overall experience is very repetitive and is exactly why I dont like forcing difficulty options to games. It becomes way imbalanced.

Any game that doesn't just turn enemies into bullet sponges is alright with me. Nothing is more frustrating than dumping an entire mag into a guys head just for him to turn and one tap you. Fallout is a great game, but has that issue. I always mod it so both me and enemies die within a few shots. Along with other hard core mods, like one that makes loot more rare. It can make the most basic encounter very intense.

I played that level on TLOU 2 on grounded where you re Ellie sneaking through the woods by the scars torturing the WLF and then up through that parking garage and then down into that s shop where the brute busts down the door. Yeah that was like some of the hardest and funnest 4 hours of my life trying to get through that without dying, carefully managing ammo for the right opponents, etc. wild stuff man

There s something to the Rockband/Guitar Hero Expert setting you could always play your entry-level songs, and actual notes and drum kicks would come down the pipe on-rhythm, which would make it easier to train your brain to hear and play what you saw. You could then move through more difficult songs and build confidence as you played I half-assed learned to play drums this way

I'll never understand Ironman or Hardcore type of difficulty increase. To me personally, it's more of an annoyance and lack of imagination for increasing the difficulty than it actually increases it. It puts more emphasis on luck and ( if you're playing online ) your connection rather than on requiring more skill from a player to beat it.
But like I said, that's just me.

I try to shy away from the brutally hard games, I'm kind of a casual on that. One game I've gotten into, however, is Hades, and holy crap. Anything that isn't god mode is hard mode, I don't think I've gotten to Asphodel without God mode yet and damn sure I haven't touched Elysium. Then on top of that, it has a harder difficulty level, and no thanks, I choose sanity.

In the last 5 years or so i've always decided to keep my games on hard mode, and have since that time stopped using cheats until I at least beat the game once or twice. It makes my experience so much better. It's just so much more rewarding, and fun. The sense of accomplishment is just like when I was beating Lion King, or other difficult games when I was a kid.

The Long Dark has this crazy challenge where you re getting stocked by a bear that attacked you, you gotta make it to a safe house that s miles away, there s a blizzard happening usually, and your fighting off medical aliments, plus the bear jump scares you kinda. It s fookin spooky for a survival game and it s genuinely just a hard challenge.

I remember when I first played Hitman 2 (2002. I went in crazy in the level with the clown costume and party and then opted for super stealth and hit everyone and put them in the dumpster truck outside, disposing of everyone. I was super disappointed when I didn't get 100% after all that work.
I WAS F__KING FURIOUS to say the least

What is the song at 7: 08?
btw. Classic RE was a blast on higher difficulty. Definitely wetted my seat a lot.
Also i'd like to mention
Doom 2016
Dishonored
Dragon's Dogma
The new Tomb Raider series
Darksiders 2
and of course the Metro series.
Great games on higher/highest (or survival) difficulties
