Should video games always offer permadeath difficulty?
video description
In many games, you can lose or -die- an unlimited number of times and not be reset to the beginning. That is non-permadeath. In some games, after a certain number of losses, you are reset to the beginning. That is permadeath. Simple. That even accounts for traditional permadeath games, because you can just view it as having a single -life- in that case.

Most single-player games? Sure. All of them? No.
There are games where death is an important and intentional part of the game's experience. There are even a few games where you literally have to die to make progress. There are also some where death isn't even part of the game mechanics. Then there are others where difficulty just isn't part of the appeal for almost any of the audience, or where permadeath would not fit well thematically.

It-s so easy to implement a Permadeath difficulty option there-s no reason not to include it as an option.
Why are there hard and insane difficulty options? Because sometimes people want that kind of challenge.
The way I look at games that give you the option is that it adds a different kind of replay value.
I-m all for it, as an option, in every game where it makes any kind of sense.

Offering permadeath is not bad, there will allways be those who would like to challenge themselfs to such things, and ofc also stream these things. Giving a lot of choices in difficulty is for me not a bad thing, ofc there can be too many choices but at least it's up to the player to see what they can do and wants to do.

The only game I've ever played to the point i knew 100% of everything in game was mgs. I replayed that game so often I could beat it in 3 hours on extreme. Because I listened to suggestions that if you made it to disc 2 on extreme in under 2 hours you could find out where they were holding myrel.

What if for games that want permadeath integrated for its artistic vision have permadeath as the default setting and offer players the option to disable it? The game can encourage the player to not disable it for the intended game experience and those who really don't care won't have to complain.

Batman Arkham origins is a hell of a platinum with -I Am Knight Mode- which is Perma-Death and there are two point in the game near the end that are instakill, also there are no combat warning since the difficulty is so hard... it-s terrible

I get upset if I have to redo 5 minutes of gameplay for any reason because it completely breaks my immersion. If I had to redo all of the game I progressed through up till that point I think I would probably just uninstall and return it.

Interesting that i didnt see Terraria in the video since it offers a player a choice for your character. Die and lose money or Die and lose full inventory OR DIE COMPLETELY basically your character deleted
