Some games like to punish you with difficulty right from the start. Here are favorite examples of challenging first levels fanjoy: Driver! D:
I DID beat the garage level. (yey for me!)
But I did not finish the game because I got stuck at the -briefcase- level.
What I needed to do was, drive to a point A, then to point B and end the level at point C.
Now, whatever amount of damage your car sustains -- it transfers to the next level AND you start it off by already being chased by police cars -- on a bridge!
The game was coded in a manner that no matter how good you pass points A through B, on your way to C (it can even be at the last 10% of the road) - police WILL spawn out of nowhere (in case you've managed to avoid them thus far) and WILL crush your car, so you will have under 50% HP remaining.
And you might think that -well, its designed like that on purpose-, but on the next level you MUST crash through police barricade and it will total your car.
I thought last boss in Sekiro was difficult, but oh man, I've seen people beat him.

#8 Nier Automata. I should preface this by saying I did not play the original and didn't really know what type of game it would be. That said, you're given a lot of different controls and there really isn't a tutorial. You're just dropped off in the first level with a boss fight at the end. You're very underpowered. If you lose the boss fight, you have to start ALLLLL over from the beginning and it takes 15-30 minutes to get back. I think I died at least 4 times. I started thinking this just wasn't the game for me but it turns out everyone had problems with it. This game will break you, in more ways than one. Really makes you feel like 2B knowing the struggle is real. Again. Again. Again. Again!

I bought Demon Souls on my PS5 and wanted a caster. I kept dying at the start and every time you die things only seem to get worse. You can-t heal yourself much at all till I am pretty much forced to start all over. I am just trying to figure things out and the NPC-s are relentless. I guess I should have played a knight instead. After most of the day the frustration just wasn-t worth it and got rid of the game.
Sad it didn-t workout for me because I really wanted to like the game.

I know its not super hard but as a younger kid my uncle had resident evil 4 on the ps2 and having never really played a video game like that mixed with the clunky controls, that first mission where you have to survive in the village was super hard and honestly terrifying lol

I dont know why people dislike the beginning of nier automata. I didnt know until recently that if i had died i would have had to reset. Im glad i didnt die then i would never have played it if i was sent back to the beginning

Gameranx: Can you guess #1? If you don-t, I mean-
Every 30+ year old gamer: Driver-s Tutorial!
Gameranx: Wait, no, that-s not even on our list!
Every 30+ year old gamer: All credibility for this list gone!

I never thought of The Witcher 2's start as being difficult tbh... Much less ever considered it one of the hard parts of the game. The fight against Leto for example, is insanely tough, it doesn't even compare.

I really need to try Nier automata again. I made it through the tutorial, and then the game after that bored me to tears. I only played a couple hours after that but I obviously should have kept going.

Funnily enough, I beat both Ninja Gaiden, and Driver on the first attempts, however, due to losing saves, or interest and going back years later, I was unable to get past either on my second attempts.

I remember how hard the Driver tutorial was. I was so frustrated. I was so stubborn that I played it until I beat it. I remember Driver being one of my favorite driving games until GTA 3.
