Excuse me, what? I'm rather confident that the Vampire Survivors new subgenre is not even remotely new. Roguelike/lite enthusiasts have been playing arena survivors with drafting mechanics for a loooong time. This game just stripped down a lot of these systems, making it accessible to mobile addicts, then sold it at a mobile game price point on a PC marketplace.
I feel the game does nothing new. It's success is more from the marketing tactics (mobile to PC, showing PC gamers who don't play on their phone how easily exploitable a slow meta progression can form addicts via dopamine) far more than compelling gameplay.
I am being critical of the game here as a discussion standpoint for surprise hits, the game certainly isn't bad but I think the praise given to it is falsely labeled. They cornered an untapped market, rather than created a riveting new genre!

I thought I would love pressure washer simulator after how much I enjoyed hardspace: shipbreaker. IDK, but it didn't click.
My big pick for the latter half of the year is Dwarf Fortress, but I've been a fan of that game since 2016, so my vote doesn't really count.
If you like complexity and micromanagement, give it a shot. It's not anything like Factorio, but I figure people who really like Factorio will like DF too. For me, it scratches the same itch -- stopping every few minutes to zero in on part of it and wonder what can I do to make this part work better.

I'm surprised everyone is surprised high on life was gonna be a hit. Like it was obviously going to pop off it was hyped up majorly after the first trailer and with the creators of Rick and Marty it wasn't like it wasn't known like when apex dropped no trailer no tweet nothing just a new game in the store that beat records. you all are fooling yourself if you really think high on life was a surprise hit and I'm unsubscribing because you content itself has fallen off the past few years

Shredder's Revenge and COTL were two of my favorite games this year, easily! Loved being able to enjoy both so nicely between my PCs and Steam Deck. I also really enjoyed winding down and vegging out just cleaning stuff in Power Wash Simulator after some late nights out on weekends! 2022 was a great year for games!

High on Life is this generation s Jaws. Folks just played a game that was [probably] a social commentary of the conditions plaguing Mexico and the human trafficking happening constantly at the southern border. I couldn t stand it i had to make it rain bullets. Games wild. I ll probably buy it again for the ps5.

I d argue that elden ring was a surprise hit. I mean fans of souls knew it would be good but nobody expected how popular it would become. It was millions of peoples first souls game and nearly doubled dark souls 3 sales. It turned the souls formula from that niche super hard game to a household name.

High on life is really good and so much more than a Rick and morty clone which is good. Anyone saying it's just Rick and Morty haven't played more than an hour.
Yes if you watch R&M you will like the game but it genuinely appeals to all gamers and has some really self aware and funny jokes.

I don't get the appeal of Goat Simulator; I get that it's intentionally stupic and broken, but it's so unplayable and the laughs are so cheap that I couldn't enjoy it for more than an combined hour over the original game and DLC. It is in every bad way a complete waste of time to me.

Im an industrial sandblaster and there is nothing more satisfying than blasting nasty rusty old paint and shit off of metal and making is fresh and clean. So Power Wash Simulator stole dozens of hours for me doing basically the same thing i do at work all day lol

Cult of the Lamb really hits like Reccettear. Shop management instead of town management but then a lot in the dungeon crawling. Basic premise but more going on in the background as you progress through the story. Not as dark but eh it has its moments.

High on life was such a lovely surprise, the game wasn't a AAA blockbuster breaking records and that's why I loved it. It reminded of the silly games that would come back in the 360 era like lollipop chainsaw or octodad
