I was glad to see Outward on here. I really like the combination of all the elements. One of the huge things for exploration is that the map has no position icon to show what you are on that level! You have to use landmarks to figure out where you are and plan out where to go. You also need rations to travel between areas.
They even make it that during combat you often have to take off your backpack to fight well. The backpack slows down your dodging and walking but by dropping the backpack has most of your items like ammo and potions. So a lot of planning is involved.
It’s nice because you are not some chosen one. You are just some person. There are issues but it is really good, especially for a development team of 9 people.

0: 41: Perilous yet fulfilling exploration in diverse games, like surviving on an alien planet without traditional weapons.
3: 22: Intriguing games with unique exploration mechanics and hidden secrets that reward players.
6: 29: Hollow Knight stands out for its non-linear exploration, challenging yet rewarding gameplay, and surprising openness.
9: 35: Perilous exploration in a vast interconnected solar system with minimal guidance but immense satisfaction.
12: 25: Elden Ring offers a world full of hidden wonders and dangers, making exploration thrilling and rewarding.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Played this game completely blind (no spoilers) when it came out. I was blown away by the reveal of the inverted castle; the game suddenly doubling in size. Plus finding amazing weapons like the Ruin Sword, made you go on a all out hunt for any enemies with in their treasure drop data. I remember using the Jewel Sword to farm money, finding hidden paths, 60 hour later after beating the game long ago. You'd get so sucked into the exploration, you would forget to save most of the time. Then there was stumbling across hard bosses all the sudden. excellent times.

wurm online. spend a week crafting a set of weapon and armor (after a week preparing the house/workshop to do your armor) then go outside a bit. get killed by some small critter ( or a slope if you get lucky) and have to get back to your body with the mob that killed you waiting for you. or you inflicted a wound deep enough to take care of the problem. unless YOU got the same sort of wound and then you slowly bleed. game's 18 this year i think but still hold up visualy and has a few of more complex mechanics. think of a minecraft and dark souls (for the easy mode ) fusioned.

The gameplay loop in Valheim makes exploration of a procedurally generated landscape fun for me. Since it's still in early access I can't give a final verdict.
After Subnautica I was looking for similar games and found them in Grounded and Raft.
With Snowrunner I broke the 1000-hours-gametime barrier. Inching forward through mud in order to tow and unlock a new truck from the swamp was very satisfying.
Outward was ok in co-op with some of the environment resembling a less populated Morrowind but too tedious in single player mode for me.

Another list of the same first person RPG or adjacent type games with a few indies thrown in.
Off the top.
The Rogue Squadron games, the rewards are easter eggs mostly, still.
Maneater, the rewards are. more Chris Parnell, still.
South Park games, Mario World and 64. Zelda 3.
I'd add the Jedi games, but kind of defeats my point. Every souls like, 1 entry in most lists.
Either one game or any game.
TBC, love the content though. It's just as in games as a whole, less first person RPG'S.

The first time I went to the underground in Elden Ring, lemme tell you I was just flabbergasted because of how much it looked like I was in space; that was nuts!
Also, Kingsfield looks like an intriguing concept; & I wouldn't mind seeing Fromsoft resurrect it with a bit of the polish of the Dark Souls games, Sekiro, & Elden Ring. Oh, & some of the guns of Bloodborne; seriously, far too few fantasy worlds of a technology level where they should have early firearms actually do.

Mad Max had a great environment to explore, but wasnt very rewarding. Scattering upgrades for Max and the Magnum Opus in the ruins of the old world or carried by bosses would of made exploring more rewarding than just scrap or Stronghold Upgrades- which got really grating after the 2nd time, but atleast it got somewhat easier by the time you get to Deep Friah.

I tell everyone I can to play snowrunner or mud runner. I never played a simulation game before. But I got addicted to the mechanic of getting stuck and trying to solve the puzzle of getting unstuck. Wether that is using winch to getting another truck to come get the stuck truck. I had a blast playing it. The new game is not as good. It is basically a jeep sim.

2hrs into DD2, went exploring into a cave that turned out to cross underneath half of the starting area map, filled with those annoying slimes, poison lizards, a chimera, oh and a lich. No biggie for a level 5, his pawn, and the three guards guiding me to the capital, right
Let’s just say the guards did not survive to fight the scripted cyclops later.

remnant 2 can be both great and terrible: > Love it for the randomness, HATE when you reset a world like 10's and still don't get the boss you need for a item. Needed some ring I think gave regeneration or such and must have rest neraly a dozen or more times before I got it. Least you only had to run for like 3 mins to find out the guy wasn't there.

Huuuge disappointment to not see any of the Piranha Bytes games on this list. They are known for having massive, dangerous open worlds that are not holding your hand at all (Outward was inspired by Piranha Bytes work. Starting with Gothic 1-3, including Risen 1-3 and both the Elex games. I mean. you included mods and games from 1994 on the list.

Was playing Dragons Dogma 2 yesterday when a Griffen swooped down. Standard right Well I’d been traveling for a bit and ran to avoid it only to turn the corner and see TWO cyclops casually chilling. Needless to say the next 15 minutes were an intense hell, but somehow we pulled through. That’s why this game is so fun

I am so suprised and happy that you mentioned Enderal. A standalone mod for free that is literally like a different and fully priced title in quality. Especially the voice acting in german which is the original is on professional level and perfect. My favourite game is Skyrim, and I regard Enderal as the better Game.

well. wheres morrowind that game basically set the standard for modern open world exploration (the feeling of curiosity whats in every nook an cranny was barely ever reproduced) and when you get killed by a kwama forager because your low-level spell fails 5 times in a row, you also know its difficult.

Outer Wilds is just a top notch game and will forever hold a special place in my heart. Its DLC (still yet to finish) makes it better and it's one of those games I wish I could play for the first time again and again. It's so good. And the soundtrack is the cherry on top.

i will be that guy and say gta san andreas.
sure you will unlock all areas at some point, but imagine you are new and really, REALLY want to explore the dessert and not just grind through missions to get there.
well, good luck getting far with the army on your as.
