What I need is a story-driven MMO with real-time combat like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, or fluid combat systems like what can be found in Spider-Man 2 or Batman Arkham Knight. A combat system that relies more on the fun factor and less on loot. (Not saying that it can't have loot - although that woupd be wonderful if it didn't - but making it so that the combat isn't so dependent on loot. Which is one of the main missteps of Marvel's Avengers) High-quality combat with a high level of fun factor in an MMO just doesn't exist yet, and I would like to see that change.
Preferably for consoles, since all of my Gamer friends are only on console, but at this point, I would settle for even a PC-only game that met those markers. I'd just have to build a new Friend's List on PC.
One day, man. one day, maybe a game like that can finally arrive.

CrossCode does a fantastic job of replicating the idea of playing an MMO with a group of friends in an purely singleplayer experience. For a brief moment, it did in fact feel like the characters within the story were real people that were playing the same game that I was.
I also think that it’s just simply one of the best games _ever, _ and it deserves to have so much more notoriety than it currently does. It’s a game that shows that narrative driven experiences don’t have to be shallow or basic in their mechanics, that you can have deep and engaging gameplay that is enjoyable on its own and doesn’t exist purely to carry the player to the next cutscene or dialogue interaction.
If you like indie games that people consider to be 10/10 masterpieces, you should absolutely play CrossCode.

The combat in KoA is better than any MMO I've ever played. You can rotate the camera so it's very fun cinematic action. If you liked KoA go play Biomutant which is criminally underrated. Grim Dawn is amazing and the most customizable ARPG out there. Probably even more builds than PoE and def more viable builds than any ARPG. Also shout out to No Rest for the Wicked which can be played offline and feels like it could be an MMO at some point.

'Assassin's Creed: Odyssey' is by far the best game I have ever played.
I don't give a rat's turd what the AC fandom has to say about it.
To me, as a lover of ancient Greek culture, this game is PERFECT!
PS: The random loot in Nioh 2 is meant to be used as an upgrade tool,
it's actually necessary to make your character stronger and wealthier.
You can un-randomize (if you will) by visiting the blacksmith.

the entire xeno-franchise should be on this list. especially xenoblade chronicles x. biggest offline mmo world without loading screens i ever played. and you can fly in mechas and fight airborne and landborne superbosses within and without the mechas too.
the only reason i have a nintendo wiiU is for that one game. its worth it!
edit: didnt know this was number 1, but XCX is defacto the best Xenoblade game bar none.

I put close to 500 hours into Valhalla from 2020 to 2023. As someone who works long hours it was so nice to be able to come home and just play the same game over and over with new content. I know most everyone craps on that game, but I loved it! Been an OG AC fan since the first game, and I still loved Valhalla. It was nice paying $60 plus $30 for the DLC and getting years worth of enjoyment from it.

Ff12 gambit system was so ahead of its time. That sort of AI editor to me, is a must have for any crpg like game thats playable RTwP. The ai editor is one of the big reasons Pillars of Eternity 2 is one of if not my favorite crpg. There is something so satisfying to me taking hours to perfect the ai editor and then just watching the combat happen flawlessly.

Assassins Creed Odyssey combat it's the only thing bad in the game for me, aside from some plot black holes when you play with Kassandra.
If they stayed with Origins combat mechanics it could be one of the best game I ever played and not only one of the most fun.
But Valhalla is just trash. Feels like a generic Netflix show based game.

3: 20 Umm come again No they are not making it smaller lol In fact one of the teams working on Shadows was the team that made Odyssey. It'll be in the vein of Origins and Odyssey and just as big and bloated (which i don't mind) i loved the recent three RPGs, rumour is it'll have seasonal battle pass like structure's (not confirmed.
reply

Atrocity! I don't completely agree there with you Falcon.
AC Origins Is one of the greatest RPGs ever imo. If you don't look at it as an Assassin Creed Game.
Odyssey and Valhalla I played a bit and they weren't bad too but im an absolute Origins freak tbf. im sure i put about 300h and beat the game 3 times 100%.

reply

i can't say valhalla is endless, i finish valhalla and completed all there's nothing left to do except for just roaming arround and doing everyday reda missions. unlike odyssey there is new game also the mercenary system keeps you always on your toes. the biggest downside of valhalla is the lack of new game

Only easy mode players who want to walk around one shotting everything prefers the older AC games to the new ones. The new AC games are better in literally every way. They have more stealth mechanics, better enemies, better stories and are more interesting to wander around in.

I feel like AC shadows won’t be as small as mirage. I think they had a great mix in ac origins but went too far with the rpg mechanics in the latter games. If they just stop the level gating from origins and improve the combat we’ll have a great game with ac shadows.

HECK YEAH, Strong opening. Kingdoms of Amalur is one of my favorite games.
And FF XII, when it came out I was hooked. I bought the collector's set, the box was made out of metal. I wish I hadn't lost it to a hurricane ripping my house apart.

Man I love FF12, I loved how open the map was and how freeflow it was where you didn't just have to do the story, there was monster hunts and other activities. When I eventually played FF14 I freaked out when I saw the FF12 raid in Stormblood

This is my favorite type of game and I wish there were more of them, particularly party based action. While I do like the games on this list, imo most of them don’t feel like an mmo at all. Most are just rpgs and some barely that.
reply

The sheer number of people currently playing through AC Odyssey for the first time is wonderful.
Such a great game for freedom, unmatched beauty of scenery. even the combat is great. It's a literal Greek Demi-God Simulator.

reply

This one kinda feels like gameranx scraping the bottom of the bucket. I’ve genuinely never heard somebody describe a single player game as a single player mmo just cuz it has mmo qualities isn’t that just an rpg
reply

I mean most MMO's can be played almost completely solo these days. I mean yeah there's still raid, and group content. But many MMO's have adopted a solo progression path that mirrors the group content progression path.

I'd like to throw in here the Titan Quest series. Which is a diablo 2 style ARPG but placed in greek myth. Yes, not as long as ones mentioned here but you can still get triple digit hours from this gem of a game
