Dragon's Dogma 2 is pretty fun to explore in. Sure, you have to deal with monsters all the time, but just being able to stroll through dense forest and find caves and ruins to explore is a blast. Not to say that the original game had no memorable sights, but it was pretty limited by its world design where there was usually only one path to each major location and rarely anything to find by going off the beaten path.
Similarly, the Hyrule seen in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom is also pretty fun to explore. Graphics might not be everybody's cup of tea, but it can be fun to climb up a steep hill and survey the surrounding landscape, even more so in TotK where you now have loads of flying islands to explore and the dark foreboding depths to spelunk in

I was thinking about something this morning while watching and thought maybe a video idea I recently played through the Outer Worlds next gen version and am currently playing through New Vegas; in both games, I only have the option to have 1 or 2 companions. Don't we have the technology now to handle a party that includes as many of your companions as possible Wouldn't everyone want to help me attack this stronghold with 100 bandits in it Maybe balancing is still problematic, I guess.
But what other accepted gameplay mechanics/tropes should be changed now that we have the technological abilities we do

I’ll mention a game that’s not very well know but which I loved: Everybody’s gone to the rapture. It’s not for everyone because gameplay wise it’s basically a walking simulator, however for those who like beautiful environments and slow paced, deep emotional stories, this game really has a lot to give. You basically walk through a small village and get an insight of its people’s life, relationships and ordeals through some kind of ghostly flashbacks. The different people’s stories put together will help you get an idea of what happened in this village. Great game.

I agree. Every know and then i notice I own AC Origins, and remember how nice it looks in the Saharas. Ofc, until I (now that i'm older and know better) get reminded it's a Ubisoft games.
Really - growing up loving Ubisoft games, as kids do, still today, cause why change the formula that makes them rich - and then becoming more mature, less naive, and all in all just know better. you understand how utterly f'ck'd over you were. AT LEAST Ubisoft is pretty decent at making worlds. Although many are that so, not enough.

Kind of off topic but it drives me crazy that the Steam library puts The Hunter: Call of the Wild in the Ts instead of the Hs. The only other game that does tha is The Technomancer but that doesn't matter as it would be in the same basic place it is starts with The or Technomancer. It drives me crazy that The Hunter does that because I basically forgot I had it.

I am gonna add Escape from Tarkov. May sound weird to you but those who played the game know. The nature locations in this game are made so well, sometimes I just find myself sitting in the woods listening to wind and birbs and dogs barking from distance, woodpeckers going ham. Those who know central/eastern european nature will find themselves home in this game.

Not mentioning Witcher, Elder Scroll, or maybe plenty other survival games is I think a good decision, we already knew those are beasts and when we want more, we can find something new to get lost in.
No Man's Sky gets pretty stale after maybe 500 hrs, you start seeing the fact that limitless starting to become limited. I play mostly for the expedition.

BOTW deserves a mention. Love just walking through a forest in Hyrule, listening to birdsong and the wind in trees. Also GR Wildlands/Breakpoint are nice to walk through between missions. Origins seems like a strange choice here (sounds like the reviewer had a fondness for it, but for nature lovers I’d say Odyssey or Valhalla were more interesting.

The Witcher 3 knocks it out of the park with its ambience, the sounds, the colors. my GOD! It was probably the first game that made me turn off running, ignore fast travel and just walk from place to place.
Now that KCD2 is on its way and some of its developers came from CDPR, I hope they will bring their environment from A to A.

The most realistic nature open world game that is not a triple A game but the players' game of the year is DYINGLIGHT THE FOLLOWING ENHANCED EDITION. I have played all the games you have listed here once, BUT, I have played the Witche 3 the DLCs about 3 times and DYINGLIGHT THE FOLLOWING ENHANCED EDITION ABOUT 30 TIMES.

just started playong grounded again and underselling the detail is crazy. i initially saw it as a simple game, but it actually goes hard on mechanics and visuals. imo. really awesome game for ppl who love survival crafting games. i keep gettng surprised at how much game there actually is

Im assuming that you've got a bloody good excuse to why you didn't mention The Witcher 3
Many times I've stopped mid quest to admire the sun set while listening to the wind rustle through the trees.
Also honorable mentions to Ghost Recon Wildlands and Far Cry 3.
We need part 2

A seriously underrated game you missed is Generation Zero. The map is absolutely massive. You can explore, craft, and build in the map. It also has a damn good environment. From forests to beaches, mountains, rivers, lakes, and more. Generation Zero was seriously underrated.

I feel like the Witcher 3 deserved a spot on this list.
The world is so fun to explore.
So many details and side quests and stories.
Even to this day, a decade later, i love exploring in the witcher 3.
Not to mention how breathtakingly beautiful it can be.

Arma will always take the cake in my book, if only for the workshop content. SO many terrains to explore. Fun sidenote, Kingdom Come's map and Arma's Chernarus are both in the Czech Republic, not too far apart. They look very similar: D

The world of Forbidden West, including Burning Shores, is probably my favorite game map of all time. To the point where I can’t wait to go back, even now. I also loved Zero Dawn and the Frozen Wilds DLC - such a great series of environments.

probably not something that was understandably not considered in the list, but i do enjoy walking/gliding around and just looking at the world in genshin impact. it feels like a concept art image that you can literally explore.

I thought this list was about exploring nature. The number one game on this list you only spoke on survival and downplayed nature exploration. There are plenty of games that could have fill that spot. Like valheim or Witcher 3

I have put thousands of hours into the long dark. Like, an almost embarassing amount of time. Gotta disagree with the visual aspect. The watercolor vibe of the graphics is SO PRETTY. There are lots of breathtaking views.
