Aerial Video is ILLEGAL! Hands-on: DJI Phantom Quadcopter: Indy News Leif: Personally, I can't wait to get mine. I do videography (both professionally but also for fun like everyone else) and there are rules in my city (philly) BUT if your serious about doing city aerial, or doing a pro ariel shot over a high populated area, you can shoot that stuff from a helicopter (rentals are everywhere) using what's called a gyro stabilizer (helicopters are very shaky) which is too much to buy but you can rent one or not depending on if you need total pro end product. after effects warp stabilizer is good enough if your not going for total pro (I say why not always though) but the better the original shot is the better it will be in post no matter how skilled you are in after effects or final cut etc. I can't wait to buy this thing to use because of its endless applications of going where even no helicopter can travel. I imagine with a lot of practice flying and controlling, knowledge and of course creativity, we can all start shooting like Hollywood without the price tag. As for the legalities, are you serious. I'd be way more concerned with smashing it in attempting on getting my shots than a police officer saying Hey you can't do that here. lol. Great invention! Bravo to the inventor of this. Thank god for Kickstarter right? Peace.

Wow, I didn't know you were the one that created this product. I heard and read all about it but just stumbled here by accident. Just wanted you to know that I am excited to get mine given the way I plan on using it as a number four camera, I think this (and whoever created the gopro, I have a couple for sports shots) is straight up a genius in my book. Way to go. I don't even have it yet and I'm already thanking you. Good job! People like you who allow us on a budget to get the shots we otherwise couldn't do without spending a fortune. Which I've done already. This thing pays for itself in one day. Looking forward to it and I hope I get the hang of using it.

Unfortunately, FPV (First Person View, which was mentioned, is also illegal in the U. S. now. Unless you are being paid for it, and have a permit, you cannot use FPV. Even with a spotter, the FAA wants pilots to be looking directly at the aircraft. Also, for operating RC aircraft within 5 miles of an airport, operators have to notify the tower, even if the drones are flying under 400ft (full size aircraft cannot fly under 500 feet, and usually don't get under 1000 unless they're landing.

The rules say that in the United States any remotely operated aircraft may operate from 400ft AGL and below and that any remotely operated aircraft that flys for hire is prohibited. This is do to the ever increasing number of drone aircraft is starting to become a danger to the full scale aircraft flying in the same airspace. And with out proper training and in force regulations they may pose a threat to the general public and other aircraft. They make these rules for a resin.

I think these copters are amazing but I do wonder about the safety of these things able to go so high.
I mean as these copters can go so high don't they have the potential to bring down a plane, ie if they got sucked into an air liners engine wouldn't that cause some serious problems.
I don't want to put a downer on these things cos they are fantastic but there needs to be some kind of code of practice for safety of air craft.

I loved your video. fun.
I also loved the house and grounds.
I now have over 3k invested in my Phantom 2 and gear.
As for the FAA ban for commercial use, well, I plan to follow that rule with the same consistency used by our politicians in following the laws and constitution of this country. seems fair to me. ;>)

I am trying to start a business doing Aerial Videography/Photography and this is something I did not know about not being able to charge for services and this concerns me at the moment. On the other hand there are websites that I have been to that charge so I need to research this better any suggestions on a site?

hi i have a question. my husband recently brought a drone. we uploaded a video using footage from the drone and today i looked on my dashboard and monetization was blocked on that video? i was just wondering if yo might know why? is it illegal to post drone footage on your videos?
reply

Drones or quad things. Some of you are splitting hairs. It doesn't matter what it's called, the rules will be the same. That's like skating on a sidewalk with a sign that says no rollerblading and you tell the campus police, they're not Rollerblades, they're inline skates.

how could adults be such assholes flying these things over private property. we need legislation for property owners to be allowed to shoot them out of the sky if they fly over your property less than say 500 ft. assholes grow up.

Uh Huh. weeeeeelll I live in Fayetteville NC. Which is the city/town of Ft Bragg NC and I think that you would have to be very careful about drones in this area. Just sayin. who wants a visit from the Military CID?

I just ran across this video and thought I'd update this for people watching today.
First of all, this vid is 2013 and as of 2016, you need a license. Get one! Go to FAA. gov and look for part 107 licensing.

Aerial videography is not illegal. FAA rules say that any commercial use of a controlled UAV is a violation. There is a difference in just being illegal, and the rule about commercial use.
reply

aerial video is not illegal at all, you just need to know the rules. and by the way the difference between a this and a toy is nothing, commercial intent is the dividing line.

Inexpensive quadcopters are an excellent weapon against the Apartheid state of Israel - they can be used for disrupting the civil and military air traffic in that racist state
reply

There is no 400 foot max altitude limit enforceable law current on the records by FAA. It's only a suggested guidance. And it's for flying within 3 miles of an airport.
reply

I'm more impressed by the people who make amazing quad videos with toy or hobby grade, not so much the pros with their high price Riggs

dji is crap bad command scripts that glitch and it will walk away from you dont be fooled its not you its the control boards.

Can you please provide the make and model of the lesser expensive copter and camera that was used for learning? Thanks!

Love that shot where he's flying over peoples heads with carbon fiber blades. and that's why you need regulations.
