nice video! if you checkout my new music video, WHEN LOVE HAPPENS, I originally had this outdoor scenery idea of a man chasing for love. but it seemed too complicated to execute it.
the next best thing happened as I yearning to get a haircut, I got inspired to do two different characters. one, an cool older guy, the other, a more youthful version of me. Editing was THE trickiest thing to do (I use Sony Vegas. Go see the video to see final results, let me know what you think of it: )

A very useful video, it was good to see how all of your tips are actually things I do, which must be a good thing right? I am currently planning a short short film, I listen to soundtracks for films that are similar, and gain inspiration from them. I watch films that are similar, and get ideas for cinematography. I even do the 'casting' before I even have the idea, so I can base my ideas on what will be available with the certain actors (friends) and I sort of expand ideas from there

I think you've done what you can with Backyard FX (yes, I would love to see them again, but I realize there's only so far you can go with a particular format before it gets dull, worn out, too expensive, too time-consuming, or just not fun anymore. Also, life has a way of catching up with you and I'm sure you didn't intend BFX to go forever. sooo, what I'm trying to say is, nice video. I found it informative and entertaining. I'm working on a web video right now and I'm using your technique.

If I have to come up with an idea for a music video I normally see the video as I listen to the song, not sure why just can. So I write it all down. Original ideas just hit me like that. The only problem I have is I get really excited about the video for about a day and then go into a depresion about it 'no one will want to see it' 'it will be crap' kind of thing, so I have good ideas but I stop myself from doing it. That is why I hate myself sometimes. And this is a very helpful video thanks

My process is actually pretty unique I think. First I have a list of general ideas that I add to whenever or wherever I think of them. I pick and idea from that list, and begin tapping into my resources to plan the video. I think of possible locations to shoot, and I may even have to search for a new one. After that, I can do some kind of story design. Depending on the video, this varies between written summaries, scripts, storyboards, or shot lists. Then I find actors, and finally shoot it!

Griffin you've made a good point about getting too creative and then not being able to continue the project because its either as you say too expensive or you just don't have the resources. When eve i work on my projects i always write a film or a short piece knowing full well that i have access to those locations, have reliable people to count on and plan within my budget. I think this is something that a lot of people overlook and should look into it more to avoid disappointment.

hey indymogulers i have a filming question what is the best way to film television screens like in a let's play i know that is not indymoguls thing but i figured if any body would know it would be Indy mogul.
i am considering doing a video series that features sports commentators for video games i think if i had a good video quality it could be pretty good, so if anyone has the answer please let me know

Everyday things give me inspiration to make videos. Usually if the idea sticks enough, i elaborate on it and we usually begin thinking about how to film. What kind angles, the setting, stunts, etc. and it usually develops from there. Lots of our planning for a shot is done right before we even shoot the scene. gives us a chance to tweak and see how we can make it better. Might seem off, and there is a lot more we can improve on. but its been working for us.

i'm personally one of those people that just wants to tell an amazing story if theres somthing that will not work I MAKE IT WORK i rewrite touch up and find new ways to shoot and edit to bring my vision to life the only problem is i love writting but i'm super lazy i've been working on a comic script for 2 years and it's not even close to being done however i have the basic story laid out

My friends and I are in high school and hang out a lot. We all make videos together and come up with a new idea probably 3 times a week! (good ones too) Most of them start out as jokes or stories that we like. I like to make comic strips of the funniest ones. I put all of my comics and ideas that I have wrote down in an idea box. Most of our recent videos have actually come from that box!

I find the ideas usually hit you when you're not focusing solely on trying to think of one. You can be doing something else, with the knowledge that you need to think of a concept just lingering in the back of your mind (much like Dave driving his car, and a random thought, sight, overheard phrase etc can just cause a chain reaction of ideas!

GENERALLY most great ideas come from bottom barrel producers who have to be extra creative conceptually because of budget restrictions. and if luckily a small time producer is recognized ideas are often stolen by producers with larger budgets and larger networking capabilities. ( my 2 cents )

My process starts with the end result and I just try to figure out how to get there. Years ago, when I did my first video, I saw the end result before I knew how to edit video. I even shot all the footage before I knew how I was going to edit it. It just kept working toward the end result.

My approach to the creative process is fairly simple: I put on music and do chores. The best ideas (for me) tend to come with menial labor. An idea usually hits. I tend to see the end result by the end of whatever task and then begin figuring out ways to achieve that.

when I looking for inspiration I listen to the song and mute the tv and flip around for a minuet or two tern it off and draw for a wile letting my ideas build, ask the band if they want to be in the movie get there point of view. set my idea up with planing seen by seen

How about the setting is a huge party, the main guy finds a girl he is interested in and video explores the crazy stunts the guy go through to get the girls number, also the band for this party could be the actual band of the song. How is that concept

i actually believe in trying to come up with an idea regardless of what you can or can't do. i know people who have written parts in scripts that they thought were impossible. but than someone in the crew came up with some original idea to solve it
