One thing I Haven't seen in many games is the idea that you buy a core game (let's use Grand Theft Auto as an example. You'd have a game where the main character (in this case Tommy) that goes through all the series and expansion packs, and the core games is one location (such as Liberty City) with a set of missions. Then you could buy an expansion pack to that game that would let you travel to other cities (in an effort to take over an area basically. So for example, after GTA III which was in Liberty City, you could buy Vice City more as an expansion pack and go to that city and play that -game- although it would be an expansion pack to the core game, not a separate game itself, and so on. Of course there may be issues when say an expansion pack takes place in the same city as a previous pack or the core game, but I think this concept might be interesting. You start out with the core game and set of missions and then you buy expansion packs which let you move to other areas with a different set of missions.

For me the most anticipated/disappointing expansion was Hellfire for Diablo. It added 8 levels to the original game, but they weren't as fun.
IMO the most important expansions in PC gaming history were Defender of the Empire and Enemies of the Empire for Tie Fighter, which is my favourite PC game of all time. I never had the original Tie Fighter, just the Collectors Edition for Dos. But I can't imagine the game without all of the levels.
LGR: Have you ever covered the Lucasarts Archives Collections? When I built my first PC around 1996 I used these collections to grab some great games for a good price.

Why don't they make expansion packs anymore. Having a third party team develop an officially released expansion pack or standalone expansion to a game and adding more everything. Imagine a third party company making an authorized expansion to The Witcher 3 that added more everything with the original team's seal of approval for quality that was sold in stores with it's own casing. I would love to have a collection of those like with the Asterix movies where the edge that shows the title is one piece of an image of Asterix and Obelix

I liked the game Heroes of Might and Magic V very much and so far non of the following titles in the series could match this predecessor. Its first expansion pack -Hammers of Fate- was a traditional upgrade to the game. Then, they published the second -Tribes of the east- expansion as stand-alone version, including all the previous fractions and some more. At that point, the -main- game and first expansion got quasi useless (unless you wanted to play the vanilla campaigns.

Odd third-party expansion: Diablo Hellfire, developed by Sierra. Added eight levels split into two more dungeons, a new character class, a few quests, and a few janky Easter eggs. Didn't mesh that well to all and in light of the sequel was never considered canon, though some of its gameplay improvements were brought over to Diablo 2.
(I don't want to link-spam but I did a Let's Play series of it, I can post the link if anyone's interested)

If anyone ever watched the old cartoon -Mission Hill- there-s an episode where the nerdy younger brother asks for a pc game for his birthday. His older brother ends up getting him the expansion pack instead of the original - with hilarious outburst. -If I don-t have the game, what am I supposed to EXPAND upon! -
I always think of that scene and chuckle. even back then people didn-t know the difference.

I got to say, I really miss the old boxes of games that were had cool things in them to read, excluding a manual that would usually be a thick little book that gave you a lot of information on the game. Digital is nice and all, but there is just something about buying a game box with cool art, and books inside of it that honestly if I had the choice I would go with the box set over digital.

One game you failed to mention was Diablo. DIablo had an official expansion called -Hellfire, - but was developed by Sierra instead of Blizzard. Blizzard was busy making Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2, so Sierra contacted them and asked if they could make an expansion for the first game. Blizzard said -yes- and Hellfire added new levels, new monsters, a new Monk class and new weapons.

Some of my favorites are the original Warhammer 40, 000 dawn of war games and their expansions. You can play each expansion standalone for its campaign but if you want to play multiplayer you can only play the races included in the standalone expansion which you are playing with an option to input the CD keys of the previously released expansions to unlock additional races.

I have gotten more curious about Unofficial Starcraft expansions. If you have them I know I would be interested in an episode about them. You could even do a video about blizzard expansions and cover unofficial stuff. Before they were sold to Activation Blizzard offered some of the best expansions. Diablo 2 is still getting updates and that is crazy to me.
