A new order of Wolfenstein games is out? Sounds like a prime time to catch up on the history of the franchise! Covers Wolf3D's predecessors, ports, Spear of Destiny, and more

When i was a kid, my uncle had this game on his office pc, a 386 beast of a pc, he asked me if i did want to see the future of games, offcourse i said yes and he showed me this game, i was blown away, i played a lot of commander keen, but this was entirely new, years later, i think i was 12 or so, my dad brought home something he found at his work, a freakin' Panasonic 386 33mhz laptop with 4mb of ram, it ran windows 3. 11, and yes, the first game i played on its 7 or 8 inch build in stn display was Wolfenstein 3d, it was blurry and ghosting like crazy, but i didn't care at all, i was playing wolf 3d, like you said, the grand daddy of the first person shooter!

I also always preferred doom any day of the week (because of better mouse support, you can strafe and change direction in the same time) and despite several attempts and couldn't force myself to beat the whole game. until something stroke me and I mapped my 6-button retro like Sega Genesis pad using JoyToKey with shoulder buttons for strafing left and right and voila! I have sunk completely, finishing the last episode now and then I will start Spear of Destiny. Playing Wolf 3D using retro 6-button controller is so satisfying, really a game changer. I know I could play ECWolf, but I always wanted to beat the DOS original

I always thought they were saying -Mein Maven- and it still seems more fun to remember it that way. I thought it was more fun than doom, although I agree there was only so much plot that could be implied with those simple 90 degree maps. I like imagining that if I was trying to escape a dungeon, those damn Nazis wouldn't even bother to be interrupted and stop their wacko Nazi business until I entered their room guns blazing. Kind of like -Last crusade- where the castle was literally on fire, but nobody gave a crap until the Jones boys showed up through that fireplace. We're busy with war stuff, dammit!

I really like the SNES derivatives a lot more than the original DOS version mainly because of the extra weapons, overhead map, better sound design and simpler level design, the 3DO and Mac versions being the best. It really feels like they overdid the mazes in the original and even though they simplified the maps to make the game work better on the SNES, I think they were far easier to navigate and far less frustrating to explore. The Jaguar version was particularly interesting, if almost feels like it is Wolf3D running on Doom.

Hey LGR. Wanted to recommend that you check out the mod for the original DOS version called -Better Wolf3D-. It fixes the default controls, giving you dedicated strafe keys and making it so the mouse no longer moves you forward and back, and adds a simple mini-map to the bottom right corner where the gun icon usually is, to limit the monotony of backtracking similar looking halls.
Awesome playing the original DOS release this way now.

I played Wolf3D in the 90s and honestly I didn't like it very much. The first person perspective was new and fascinating for a while, but it was so frustrating trying to find your way around the levels. Nowadays it's more tolerable since you can just google the levels and find all kinds of quides and maps, but we didn't have internet back then. Doom was way more fun to play with more varied levels and better movement and well. everything.

I didn't get to play the full Wolfenstein experience until I got the GBA port. I did get to play Spear of Destiny which, alongside DOOM, was my introduction to First-Person Shooters back when it was released. My Grandma, the person who introduced me to them, loved those games and played on the harder difficulties.

Wait hold up! I don-t know about any Wolfenstein game after this one because Doom is where it-s at so correct me if what I-m about to say is wrong but is the main character of Wolfenstein 3D and DOOM the same character? They look the same, they act the same, ARE THEY THE SAME? If so, we know Doomguy-s identity.

Am I the only one who isn't a big fan of MachineGames' Wolfenstein? The gameplay, at least of New Order / Old Blood, is pretty good, but it's bogged down with melodrama in my opinion. Like they're trying to be another sappy war shooter instead of the silly fun the series has been known for.

My mom only listened to Christian music, I wasn't allowed to watch The Simpsons and the next street over was off limits without permission.
But when it came to her shoot-'em-up games.
Well.
Was there something concerning about a 7 year old gunning down Nazis?
