I bought this piece of shit game way back in 1997 because I was starting to get tired of. NFS3: HP!
I saw it and I said to myself: Hum, I love Test Drive back in the 80's, this should be good!
Oh man, what a dissapointment. This is one of the worst dissapoinments I ever had with a racing game: cheating AI, bad physics, bad car models, bad sound FX, bad racing tracks, bad gameplay. I sold it next week. Then I spend the next 15 years trackin it to buy it again just for that really good soundtrack.
That and the autobahn track were the only two good things in this game.

I think I started out with Test Drive 5 for the Playstation, of which I'm sure that even that had better graphics than Test Drive 4 there did, which you'd think it would do anyway, but this is in terms of the console version being better than the PC version I guess haha! It doesn't look like I missed out on much from not having played those previous four games, although the 'free roam' aspect of Test Drive 3 (I think you said) sounds interesting! Congrats on what was 5 years of LGR anyway, and now it's 4 months away from being 6 years! :o

This was the first racing game I ever got. Being I had no reference to other racing games, I had a lot of fun with it. Looking back though, it definitely wasn't good and I wish I would have went with the Need for Speed series instead. I was so ignorant to better racing games, that I actually got Test Drive 5 when it came out. It was fun for a while, but I started to realize just how behind the series was compared to NFS. The original Test Drive Off Road was a lot of fun though, I played that A LOT.

I remember playing Test Drive 5 at a friend's house when I was younger. We would put in the cheats for invulnerability and stopping opponents and making your car jump when you honked the horn. We'd laugh hysterically for minutes at being able to bounce around the map thanks to the ridiculous physics and the opponents couldn't do anything.
The soundtrack for that game kicked ass. And it was ridiculously easy to mod the vehicles because their models and stats were packed in individual zip files

I've never understood why older racing games insisted on switching to a reverse view when backing up. Sure, I guess the idea is to let you see what's behind you, but given that the controls stay the same, meaning they're reversed from your perspective, any convenience in seeing behind you is negated by the confusion of trying to figure out which way to steer. One game even switched to a reverse angle while going through loops. Yeah, that's a huge help.

This was my first racing game experience when I was a kid. Didn't get a console until I was a bit older, but my parents always let me play games on the PC, this was my first game after playing Tonka games and other things like that, always had a soft spot for it regardless of how it looks and plays compared to newer/better stuff. I certainly had fun playing at least.

Just wanted to say that this is one of my all time favourite racing games, mainly because I played it in my first computer in my early teens. I found the engine sounds very representative, the lineup of cars very interesting (especially the locked ones; the Mini with the F1 engine was insane) and the soundtrack is one of my all time favourites in a game.

Fair review. I hate to agree but Test Drive should not have thrown itself competing with the other racing games that it was supposed to be simulation game. I love Test Drive 1-3 but I can also see that from Test Drive 4, it had already lost the focus and competing itself with Daytona USA, Ridge Racer, Need for Speed and then later Forza series etc etc.

Not just antoher five years dude, you made it past 2020! Funny review and it wasn't even that bad, I had the same feeling about TestDrive 5 on the PSX, had it in good memory from my childhood but when I repurchased it some time ago I was pretty dissapointed, it didnt hold up well and it wasnt really good back then, in parts almost unplayable!

I remember buying this after absolutely loving Test Drive 5 and I was kind of blown away at how much of a disaster it was. It's probably the worst 3D racing game I've ever played. Test Drive 5, though, is probably my favorite of all time - and honestly it just feels like a reboot/fixer-upper of Test Drive 4. You should review TD5!
