This game has a monopoly on modern mainstream platfromers. It was released in a time there everybody released first person shooters, but was a platformer with their features, like native Windows support, a level editor and Internet multiplayer. This monopoly means, that the Jazz2 ist still played today, even if it has flaws (lame singleplayer campaign, spikes don't work in multiplayer, buggy network code for DSL and missing bass-solo in Tubelectric. Platformers do have a market share, but nobody uses it. Most modern games are either 3D shooters (like another Doom game, minigames with gambling elements (like Simpson Tapped out) or bloatware (like Broforce. A Modern (2D) Platformer with a level editor, multiplayer, a mainstream publisher and low system requirements could have success.
Jazz Jackrabbit 3D would have never succeded, because making an Unreal-Engine Port with the Story of what is so uncreative that uncreativity has become a feature (ripping of Sonic the Hedgehog, Earthworm Jim, Rambo and Bugs bunny) will fail. It is not about plot (or creativity) - it is about gameplay.

It's sad how the gameplay forces the visuals to be ruined.
Going fast means you need to see what is coming ahead or you're just gonna take damage all the time. But this means either constantly moving the camera in the direction you're moving or making it wider like here. But then you can't appreciate the art and it always looks miniscule.
Rayman is the opposite and the only one of it's kind I know of. It's incredibly slow in the movement as Rayman mainly walks and even his run is slow.
Which allows them very close up of the environment, meaning more pixels meaning we get breath taking pixel art that looks amazing with how many great pixel artists we have today, even working in 32 and 16 bits with high detail and more color options.
It's sad you can't enjoy it as much here due to the camera distance.

I first played with Secret Files and I loved those first levels in the updated version. The music and pink tileset has burned into my memory. The problem is that those levels were clearly designed with Spaz in mind, playing as Jazz in those is a chore (and some areas are explicitly inaccessible) due to Jazz having that stiff uppercut as extra jump while Spaz's double jump was simply more natural. On top of that Lori, due to having neither of those, was terrible to play as.
Still, great game, lots of memories playing split screen with my brother and messing about in the level designer.
Little note about boss fights, what they needed was screen locking.

Here it is. Other than Sonic 3 & Knuckles, this was the first proper 2D platformer I ever played. And it was a freaking blast! I had it on my dad's computer. While I don't know if my dad got the actual game or just copied it from someone else, I do recognize the purple background from the European release, as it looks a lot like the main menu's.
Also, from what I've heard, not only is the gem from the stolen wedding ring incredibly humongous and rare, but also Devon's main source of power for his time machine, which he wants to use to erase rabbits from existence. So yeah. Not just petty larceny anymore, huh? -

So now 5 more years (and a half) passed and I have my old CD in my hands (well, put it down to write. No idea if it still works though. I really loved this game. Single player was good for some time, but multiplayer with my two friends was just so much fun for months and years.
Enjoyed watching your video, it brought back good memories.

I thought i should comment as this is the 1000th comment. So yeah.
I love this game, although i recently learned it copied quite a bit from another game called Earthworm Jim. Still, JJ2 is crazy nostalgic for me as it is one of the first, if not the first video game i ever played.

4: 04 what? That's what I'm chasing him down for? I had no clue, i just thought the game was about killing turtles for fun! In hindsight that's pretty psychotic, a step further from killing everyone over a wedding ring. I had no clue, I was just happy my sister let me play as Spaz: /

My dad once completely out of the blue made a burping sound identical to the yellow walking enemy at 3: 55. No joke! It's probably the most random way of experiencing nostalgia I've felt, and pure coincidence. But it sure made me re-download the game

I loved this game so much as a kid. I-d spend so much time wandering around instead of actually getting through the level because the world was just so curious and creative. I spent too much time imagining what it would be like to be in their world hahaha

When I was 5 years old, I was in hospital for month becouse of eye surgery. I was in room with an older probably 15 years old and we both had laptop. He instaled Jazz on my pc and man I loved that game. The memories are strong even 15 years later.
