Celebrating the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls III! It's considered by many to be the best in the franchise, but how well does Morrowind (and its expansions Tribunal and Bloodmoon) hold up fifteen years later?

I first played Morrowind on the original xbox when I was a child! (I'm 21) What really drew me in was the map- I'd never seen a game with a huge poster map before, and so I instantly wanted to know more about the game. I would take out the map and just stare at it. It was one of my favorite games and it's so nostalgic. I would sit crosslegged on my dresser in front of my little chunky TV and just listen to the theme song on the opening screen. Because my xbox would take like five minutes on each loading screen, I had a lot of time to analyze the concept artwork in the game and I convinced myself that my biggest goal in the game was to get a green axe. I had absolutely no idea where to get the axe though, and being a child I could not fathom the combat system. I spent my entire time hopping from town to town and stealing from people. One day I finally managed to find that green axe and it was literally the greatest moment of my life. I found it in a town with mushroom trees and houses. But I remember all the sudden everyone hated me (it was probably one of my first times in a Telvani region of the game) and so I just assumed I stole too much stuff and everyone hated me. So I just. quit playing the game. I really wish I would have stuck through it though because I didn't get to spend as much time with that glass axe. I recently bought it again on PC and it's been insane actually being able to KILL things and upgrade my character. It's a totally different experience and I do kind of miss the time where Morrowind was so mysterious. On the bright side, even with over 100 hours of gameplay I've still discovered less than half the map and haven't even touched the main quest! There's still a lot I haven't discovered and that's exciting.

back when elder scrolls game was good. Skyrim is prolly the most overrated game ever made. when i first played skyrim like a month or 2 when it released i played 1 day loving it and the day after i slowly got bored throughout the day and rushed at the end of the day to finish the main story and then i stopped playing. started rushing it when i got level 13 i believe and just felt dissapointed. and that was all on top me never hearing about it until maybe 4 months before skyrim came out i got oblivion for ps3 and loved it to death i couldnt stop playing but then the skyrim experience i gave you came and went. it was too samey and casual less RPG elements and class didnt really matter and less unique weapons etc. there are some cool things in skyrim for sure but compared to the older games skyrim is a baby version. i have played daggerfall morrowind and oblivion and all those 3 are far better and morrowind is prolly the best one out there while daggerfall is huge but has those 90s limitations but def a crazy immersive game with a lot of love gone into it like morrowind. i hope the next elder scrolls takes a few steps back from skyrim and goes more into RPG than skyrim did and mixes a morrowind and oblivion style into one with many unique weapons and a usefull class system while having amazing graphics and more enemies than skyrim.

Morrowind stigmatized the open world genre to me - it is the game that made me avoid open world games from then on at all cost. Haven't played Witcher, Breath of the Wild and on and on cause of Morrowind - cause open world. A friend of mine even lent me Zelda BotW for like a year but I never touched it, despite having played every Zelda game that came before it.
I remember getting lost badly in Morrowind even when I tried to just stick to the main story - ended up walking for what felt like 30 min or more (there were some strong monsters at some point that I needed walk around) and ended up in some border wall station or whatever. Since it was clearly not the place I was supposed to be (and was killed by the guards when I picked up some armor, and I didn't want to walk back I closed the game and moved on. Cause even if I found my way back, I had no idea where to go.
Like, after a workday I like to relax and just enjoy a nice story without having to look that hard for it. Morrowind doesn't do that for me. So yea, if later games streamlined on the progression part, I'd say that's a really good thing - not that I'll ever know tho: v

Man, i WISH i could get into Morrowind.
It's just one of those games for me where i bought it years ago and i'll occasionally pick it up to try it out because i keep hearing about how much fun it is and how great of a game it is, and then i play until about the second town in and completely and utterly lose all interest. Then i proceed to not touch it for months or even years until the next time comes when i get the urge to give it another go.
It's the same thing with games like Dragon Age and The Witcher series. I just can't enjoy them despite my best efforts. They're so clunky and awkward, and the story just isn't enough to make up for it. Which is honestly kind of a bummer because i want in on the fun too.
But who knows, maybe this time around i'll fare better?

I keep trying Morrowind but I can never get into it. The fact that all your stats are useful (as opposed to Oblivion where they don't do much or Skyrim where you don't even have them) and you actually have creative uses for other spell effects other than damage or heal are enticing but everything feels so slow and awkward. The lack of markers or fast travel get old fast. If I was a teenager with all the time on my hands I might think its better and more immersive this way, but instead I just feel like several aspects of the game are wasting my time. I dunno maybe my fatigue isn't high enough to enjoy Morrowind.

I used to disliek the game, partly due to being afraid of the assassins that appear after sleeping thanks to the dlc.
Never gotten into it after watching this video I finally played Morrowind again in 2018 and absolutely loved it!
Morrowind has one of the most atmospheric worlds I've ever had the pleasure to play in and the story is phenomenal - I love how straight forward you could believe the prophecy or take it as a random self fulfilling one. It's great that it there is enough space for open interpretation, thanks to not explaining too much/ being to hand-holdy.
Gosh, Morrowind is SO good!

Morrowind is my favourite Elder Scrolls game. I know the menus can be weird, but I think how interactive they are is kind of neat. I also do not mind the way the dialouge works, although I also completely understand why it would be frustrating to people. It is my favourite because I love the lore, story, and roleplaying in Morrowind so much. It seems so real when you can just kill anyone and destroy the threads of destiny or whatever. It also surprised me in a good way when I joined the fighters guild and thieves guild and ended up in a massive conflict between them with me struggling to stay neutral.

Hi, since I've actually done a bit of research on this, I'd be remiss to not mention that Xngine was in parts integrated into NetImmerse, that became Gamebryo, that became the Creation engine. Bethesda has a ridiculous software lineage, especially for The Elder Scrolls series.
There is a legitimate critique on the fact that everything has been rewritten several times, bringing to mind the popular question -If you replace every part of a car, is it still the same car? -, but I still think it's very interesting.

I remember when i was younger, my brother gave me his xbox and a bunch of games alot of them were crappy, but he had baldurs gate dark alliance 2(which i beat) and morrowind, the game of the year edition. I had so much fun with it, especially once I figured out the combat. I used to remember there was a cheat for infinite health too with some button combos. I easily had a few hundred hours into it. Morrowind easily became my all time favorite game and got me into rpgs as a whole

For me Morrowind is the first RPG I played that immersed me in an alien world. Before that, I saw video games as mostly recreational experiences, that is, most of the fun came from the game mechanics or the narrative qualities of the game. There could be interesting lore, but I always perceived it from a very external point of view.
In Morrowind, it felt immediately different. It was a consistent world, and in a way I was my character like if I was reading a good book.
