Instead of getting a controller board, why just don't get a better use of the GPIO?
The board may add sound quality (hdmi, but the speakers and the acoustic destroy it anyways.
The mesh of the speaker is very cheap, that's why they don't attach the speakers in the front wood like old TV's, but it was done for a reason! That's why the sound is bad.
Good design for the speaker wholes but not carved. BTW, there is not carving at all. this -flat- appearance is ugly.
That big whole at the back tells a lot about the amount of time given to that part of the project. The network and the usb's should be extended to smaller whole to give a cleaner look.
And. glued? Not even some wood sticks with small screws to hold things in position?
It's mistake is to focus their product in the versatility of the raspberry.
People who play with raspberries are more technical than the average, they not only can do a much better product and also just by looking to the components they know the price is absurd. Their hobby is to do things better and cheaper than this.
The product should have better technical and design decisions. It's cool as a amateur build, not a product.
All the parts are there, but the execution is just poorly made. It's hard to build a product, I know. But you are the one who are asking the price. Please, this this as a constructive opinion.
$275 bucks is WAY overpriced. Setup the mark of $95.

Say what you will about the efforts of amateur -Maker- types, but the build quality of the finished product is so. awful, ESPECIALLY for that price.
If I was going to charge 300 bucks for a woodworking product, I wouldn't make it out of cheap plywood, or at the very least put a veneer on it.
His sanding and glueup job were terrible.
Those joints made my inner woodworker start flipping tables.
The -Legs- were off the shelf wood pegs that are literally fifty cents a piece.
The sloppy -Hot Glue Everywhere! - of the interior rather than building internal supports.
And the finish could have been better. A cherry or walnut stain before the obvious coat of spray lacquer (And some sanding in between coats at that.
Even the little details, like the opening for the screen being just slightly too small and cutting off the text.
Call me a perfectionist, but were I in his position, I could not in good conscience charge what he's asking for that. And I DAMN sure wouldn't pay that much for it.

Nice unit. And I would totally buy one if I could think of a single reason to justify it to the wife. One small note: I noticed a few of the aesthetic -vent holes- in the back of the unit were blown out. A cheap layer of painters tape over the wood where you're drilling is one of the easiest ways to prevent this. Other than that it looks great. I hope Dan gets himself a 3d printer so he can start cranking out units that have the iconic look of televisions from more recent decades. Like some of the funky plastic shapes of the 70's (the JVC Model 3240 for example) and the liberal application of wood grain plastics from the 80's.

I just recently built a computer off of E-bay using a 7 year old AMD FX chip for the integrated graphics, a 64 gb ssd, 2gb RAM, on a mini board, installed with LAKKA. The idea was to fit it in a lunchbox, but a mini ATX is to large. It runs everything great though up to N64. The cool thing is, it won't age for what it is for and I can build a cabinet for it later with old school controls. Right now I can plug in via USB into anything and play. Thought about the Raspberry, but this is more powerful. Cost me $100 overall and am quite pleased with it. Future project: build woodgrain case with CRT monitor and joysticks! .that will be the day.

Looking at all the costs and the few flaws I don't think the price is justified. Honestly at that price the more fixable flaws that I see with the speakers and screen should not even be there. Really cool at first unto you realize the price is not what you think it is. I know I am negative on something that is cool, but it is a bit of a downer that it is not of higher quality. Thanks for the reviews because at times they bring up interesting stuff like this that even if I don't like I find fascinating.

CRT effects are usually pretty unconvincing because at 1080p (or even worse, 480p) you simply don't have enough resolution to do them properly, so you end up with 'scanlines' that just overlay a grey line every other row. This will change soon-ish however, as with very high pixel density 4K monitors you should finally have enough resolution to make them almost identical, as you can start leaving entire rows black, simulate the rounded beam edges and brightness differences and so on.

0: 54 I'm sorry, but the hook up spot at the back is really unprofessional, and shouldn't be like that on something SOLD. as a hobby device made by a friend I can understand, but to buy something like that. maybe i'm being picky, but SOOOO much dust will get into the unit at htat spot, and dust on connection leads is VERY BAD.
a perfect solution would be if me made a cover door for it, so when you just using it, you can shut the door in the back and cover up the holes.

Looks like a neat item, I'd consider it if I walked into the mall and saw it. Some of us still work at the dying Malls of America: P Too much drink and little impulse control lol I meant to edit my comment but accidentally deleted it because I was laughing at the moment. I don't think if I was drinking I'd be like I really need a Raspberry Pi TV, but point taken, I was at a bar a last night.

Yah, this is good only in richer countries where people can put money to nice stuff and hobbies. In Places where people can't afford anything, these businesses wouldn't even start.
It is better to do some DIY with scrap materials if you live in shitty country. I think it is more interesting when you use whatever you can if you want something but cant afford it, instead of just buying stuff.

Why faux rabbit ears? The rabbit ears could be legit wifi antennae! This project is awesome. If I had the extra cash right now I'd certainly be putting in an order. also a big bonus that the money goes directly to the creator and not entirely to some management team who skim off 99%, only leaving a scrap for the person who builds it!
