While it's a bit debatable which company first -invented- the modern gamepad form factor, I think it's pretty safe to say that Nintendo either invented it or, at the very least, was the first to popularize it, with their NES controller (which was more or less based on the same form factor as Nintendo's previous handheld LCD games.
Almost all other game consoles and -home computers- went with the more traditional joystick at the time. It's curious how they all thought that the joystick would be a feasible game controller, when in fact it's extremely limited for that purpose, and unsuitable for most game genres. In retrospect, Nintendo's NES controller form factor, while still extraordinarily primitive compared to modern gamepads, was a stroke of genius, even if they didn't know it back then. All modern gamepads use, essentially, the same form factor, just with a more ergonomic shape, and more buttons and thumbsticks.

I had the NES version of that gamepad. I got it specifically for Caveman Games because the regular controller hurt my thumb while doing the wife toss game. I think I paid $5 at K-Mart for it. K-Mart in the 90s was magical, at least for me. They kept getting massively discounted big box DOS games as late as 1997 or so. Infocom games for $1 each was awesome, even if they were re-releases without feelies. No joke, whenever they got a new shipment of games in, I'd come out with a cartload of games.

I Was 7 years old in 96. I asked my parents to buy me the quickshot joystick at the store in South Africa. It had that cd in the box. Got home plugged it in to the sound blaster 16 my dad got couple weeks before. Went through the hell of loading up that cd. My dad walked in and turned on the sansui amp connected to the sound blaster 16. I clicked simpsons doom for the first time. The rest was history.

We used to have a 5000 DOS Games CD-ROM from the mid 90s that had just tons of junk on it. There was no GUI. But the same A-Z game hierarchy. The interesting thing is that it came with our NEC machine, and DID include licensed versions of games, for example Duke Nukem, and Doom. We always questioned how legit it was and wondered if CompUSA was just doing something shady with their PC deals.

Quickshot made gamepads for a good few systems using that design, I'm wondering if that's why it's got that panel on the front so they only have to remould that one. I've got one for my SNES and my MegaDrive and I know they also had 'em for the Master System and NES as well. I like it, at least when they did it in black. I actually really like my SNES one cuz of the shield d-pad.

ah early days of chinese junk, probably free after rebate, I found something similar in the garage, kind of sad I threw it out. The joystock was hollow and creaky, basically what you get with cheap ebay knock off xbox controllers today, they look the part, almost, but no one would in their right mind want to use one. Best way to describe these types of things. they are film props.

Wait, was that the full DooM Game? Because if it wasn't, they must have imported the content of the simpsons doom WAD file into the IWAD (the main WAD file, ie. DOOM1. WAD or DOOM. WAD, because the shareware version doesn't support loading PWAD's (the additional WAD files. And distributing that modified IWAD would most definitely be against copyright laws. Just wondering: )

AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Clint I ran into the same. erm. -confusion- using this same CD on my IBM Aptiva last night while filming, and it was like I was hearing your voice instead of my own lol. Just did a search and found this video, so it's possible I've seen this video before and forgotten lol. My god what a shambles of a disk. Mine came with a new old stock QS Super Warrior.

Quick Shot joysticks in England were like. the lowest common denominator for joysticks for Commodores, Ataris, Spectrums, Amigas etc. Anyone with taste would have a Zipstick. I'll see if I can look one out for a donation if I still have one, as I think you'd love it. It uses switches that give a satisfying click on not just the buttons, but the joystick, too.

Watching this in the early hours of the morning and hearing Clint say the name of the place I literally live now made me think I was delirious. Thankfully after rewinding the video and inspecting the address it is in fact the P. O. Box that exists not 5 minutes away from my house. Thank goodness I'm not going crazy. then again, I watch these videos at 3am, sooo.
