This is a review of Captain Claw, an action platforming game for the PC from Monolith Productions. Not only was it notable for them following on the heels of Blood, but it was one of the first games released on DVD!

Ahhh, Captain Claw! - Was first introduced to this game back around 2004/2005 when I was a kid by my parents and we had V1. 0 (I still keep the installed files from back then on my dedicated Windows 7 machine, the last Windows version which wants to run this and many more oldies at all. I can confirm that the very first version is a pain to be played and I've only managed to ever get to 6th level, where I was stuck at some point and was unable to continue further (not sure how dad was able to finish the whole game, and mom was stuck forever at the Final Boss of level 14, both with and without cheats. Even worse, I was never able to get past level 4 without my two beloved cheats - mpkfa (GODMODE - unlimited ammo and lives) and mpjordan (Surely named after Michael Jordan: D and giving you the superjump) (funny how I still remember these codes after 15+ years: D. I've tried playing from the beginning of the game recently, after all those years, but was again stuck at level 3 this time. :D Anyway, I am sure that this is the best game I've ever played and I doubt it would be forgotten soon: . GL anybody wishing to give it a shot! ;)

even though it's old and 2d it's one of the few games where you never at any point get bored. Hard but not insane, you don't get enough information, and back in the day didn't have walkthrough videos to watch so everything was challenging and it progresses, some of those 10minute levels can take hours for the first time. There are so many smart ways to play this game, different ways to kill enemies and bosses, some traps are so challenging which makes completing levels even more rewarding. Newer games have cool graphics and stories but most games become a bit repetitive after a point or the story takes over and gameplay feels like just connecting dots between chapters or in some games the combat is too complex and unnecessary. Claw is the most underrated masterpiece of the old days. It's so overlooked probably because it was released at the time when 2d games were becoming old-fashioned and people wanted to play 3d realistic games and shortly after gta, cs etc like games and ps became the new trend. Even i would have probably skipped it if i didn't have a shitty win98 pc in early 2000s.

This is one of my favorite games. I used to see my neighbor play this game in his computer when I was little kid. The art of this game just made this a very satisfying experience for me. So after I bought a PC of my own later on, this was the first game that I bought. I couldn't complete the game at all. It was super hard for me at that time. Then with time the CD stopped working. Now I thought I could buy this game on steam and play it, but its totally not being sold anywhere digitally. This happened to me with the old harry potter games as well. They are not available as digital downloads now.

Interesting how this is what they considered a game without -excessive violence-. It makes a lot of sense coming from the developers of Blood, in a time when Doom and Quake and such were all the rage (pun Id-tended, but even though there are more violent games around now, todays indie scene is so full of experimental convention-defying games that calling this game non-violent seems like a joke. Unrelated to that, this game looks absolutely gorgeous both in spritework, animation and background assets, and reminds me a lot of the first Rayman, which should be considered high praise!

Found this game accidentally sometime around 2002. I loved the art style, the music and the voice acting. Being a cat lover helps too; )
Don't be deceived by the appearance - this is not exactly a kids' game. It gets really hard towards the end. An excellent challenge for gaming veterans too.

For anyone that wants to play the game again but cant find it go check The Claw Recluse and you can download it for free. Also older versions dont work with newer systems like Windows 10, but the one you can download there is compatible with basically anything. So yeah, go and try to give it a go! :D

I remember getting this game in one of these multimedia kits from Creative. It was even fully translated to portuguese! Me and my friends always found it very difficult, I never had passed the 4th level, but my friends made it to 6th or 7th. But we always kept playing it despite thi difficulty.

It was famous in India until mid 2000s. Claw is one of the first games I have ever played and holds a special place in my heart. This game was way ahead of its time. Amazing level design, varied and amazing art direction. If the game is too hard there are cheats to pass through tough levels.

Mine was a beautiful blue CD of a close up on the Claw drawn on the thingy you show at 1: 05, it came in a bundle with a game to learn math with a cow named Millie and something else that I don't remember. I'm from Chile so I bought here around 2000. The good old days man.

I only ever knew this game as a still image of what I thought was a grey-skinned pirate (he looked a bit less -furry- at that point) next to the -Captain Claw- logo and the game's web address on Microsoft's Game Sampler 2 demo disc.
