TOOM - Portrait Doom on a Rotating CRT Monitor

When I covered the Radius Pivot on LGR Oddware, I showed how games like Doom aren't designed for portrait mode. But then I said it would be dumb/fun if something like 'Tate Doom' actually existed, and WELP. Developer Matt Phillips took it upon himself to make that happen, and TOOM is the result! A vertical Doom conversion that runs in MS-DOS on original 486 PC hardware. - Grab PCToom on Github: - TOOM development thread on Twitter: - Here's my Oddware video on the Pivot Full Page Display

Hey Clint. It would be cool, if you could report your opinion on the new Framework laptop, that should be nearly completely repairable and upgradeable. Linus reported today on it and I am really amazed by this new old philosophy. I had and have a modular Fujitsu Siemens laptop and always loved that freedom. Second battery, OK, CD or DVD or Floppy Disk drive, OK etc. It would really be nice, if you could give us your opinion on that thing, especially with your retro background. Thank you.
By the way, love your style and music.

I've been messing around for a while rotating my computer monitor and seeing what games will function like that. Unsurprisingly very few do but I found Forza horizon 4 works at almost any resolution and rotation beside some menus getting cut off a bit. There's no practical application for any of this beside making some games more challenging, I've just been bored in lockdown: p

I wonder if this works with the doom level editors. The scenery could be extended or replaced with taller versions. This could be great fun. Also with flying enemies, is there a problem with shooting them at higher angles? this could add a new level of difficulty. At some point in the future when I have enough time, I'd certainly love to get a copy and have a play with it.

Not only is this awesome because. it just is, and props to the coder for doing such a good job so quickly, but the more I watch the more I think -This is absolutely how DOOM should be! -
A follow-up with Quake I-III if possible on your portrait mode TFT and of course a higher-spec machine would be wonderful.

Eh, I am avid player since 1988 (computers were rather rare in former USSR. But I never played Doom, Quake, etc. Tried Half Life lately, because people preaching how good it is. Ultimately boring. Closest stuff to a shooter I enjoyed was Deus Ex.

I can-t decide what-s cooler, if the technical achievement of Tate-ing Doom, or the lore written to justify it. Hope Microsoft make this official and includes into their Doom 1/2 Xbox games, so it can also be played this way on Xcloud.

-LGR I get the impression that you're low-key internet famous, and don't quite realize it yet. I hope you keep doing videos you love regardless of your sub count, the fun you have and the humor you bring makes your videos awesome.

You should really make another build just for that graphics card and monitor. I'm sorry, but I couldn't imagine swapping that stuff out all the time. It would really be hilarious if you used that Aquarium case for it.

4: 3 is great for portrait. 16: 9 is pretty long and I have trouble with a portrait 16: 9 monitor, though works well if the 16: 9 monitor is small. Then again, my current monitor is 32-, so I need portrait less

Another problem: Everything is too squished, because Toom still runs in Doom's 320x200 Mode Y mode, instead of tweaking it to be a stretched 200x320 mode.
Also, I thought Toom stood for TikTok Doom.
