Borderlands First Reactions Confirm What We All Suspected

Really surprised you didn't mention anything about the number one reason most people are disliking this film so far and that's the casting. Gina Gershon is age 62 and plays Moxxi who's estimated to be 52. Cate Blanchett is 55 and plays Lilith who is 22. Jamie Lee Curtis is 65 and plays Tannis who is likely to be somwhere in her 30s. Kevin Hart is 45 and plays Roland who is 34. Not to mention the fact that Claptrap should have been voiced by the original voice actor David Eddings if Randy Pitchford wasn't an asshole.
Also where is Mordecai Where is Brick If they're just cameos in this movie when they were 2 of the main playable characters in the first borderlands then that's a huge loss. They're going to have Krieg as a main character in the first Borderlands movie when he was a DLC character in Borderlands 2 and not feature 2 of the main characters from the first Borderlands That makes no sense. Tiny Tina wasn't a main character either, she has an interesting story but only got a main role in Tiny Tina's Wonderland which was the latest game to come out and still not even a playable character. Same thing with Tannis, sure she's part of the story but not as integral as the main characters from the first game.
There's just so many bad decisions here, and it's really disappointing to the fans of the franchise. I can't understand why they're having actors in their 40's, 50's and 60's playing characters almost half their age in action roles. Kevin Hart is 5'2 and Roland is 5'11 by the way, solid choice for a comedy actor to play a character that is the most serious and straight forward, non-joke making character in the Borderlands universe. It's just sad and makes the core audience highly skeptical.

Another criticism: stop hiring big name actors just for the name recognition! Focus on making comic book and video game adaptations that are faithful to the source material, even if you have to hire relative unknowns just because they fit the role!
Look at Homelander from The Boys! I had no idea who Anthony Starr was before he played Homelander, and it is clear that he was cast because he fit the role so well! I can’t imagine anyone else playing Homelander now. Contrast that with Kevin Heart playing Roland. He does NOT fit the role of Roland at all! Not only does he not look like Roland, Heart only knows how to play the funny man. Roland has the personality of a noble paladin. They would have been better off hiring a relative unknown who could not only look the part, but act the part too.
Tiny Tina is a BIG swing and a miss too! In fact the only one who doesn’t feel miscast is Jack Black, and even he feels like unnecessary star power when they could have brought in the original voice actor for Claptrap.

As soon as I saw how old the actress for Lilith was in a trailer, I knew it would be trash.
No studio making a movie that even remotely respects the franchise would make such horrid casting choices for the main characters. I have nothing against those actors, but each role requires a specific type and age of actor. That’s how show business works.
It would be like making Morrigan from Darkstslkers a 60 year old woman in all robes in a live action movie. It’s gonna fail!

The worst part of the movie is if you look at the esthetic of it, you know how devoted the team was to making a good adaptation. All the costumes, all the creatures, all the sets, this if exactly what a amazing Borderlands would look like. But once again, the producers who know nothing of the IP had to target the widest audience possible, and by doing so destroyed all the potential audience they could have had.

An animated movie would have been better cause then they wouldn’t have to trim everything down. Or they should have gone with all of the shootings and gore and kept the R rating if you are making a movie about a game with an M rating then don’t hold back and get the R rating at least that way they are trying to capture the heart of the game.

critics are paid no matter what they say, don't judge a movie on critics reviews and certainly don't follow the mob mentality. we are in a day and age where social media drive group guidance. If one person hates something, millions will hate it as it the next cool things that everyone is doing. Its going to be a fun movie

You only need to look at two things. the name Eli Roth. he is a total joke and so is virtually everything he's ever touched. Second, look at the cast. yikes. while all of them are fine as actors. they are horribly mismatched to the game characters. It'd be like if they had cast Jim Carrey to play Iron Man for Marvel.

Cate Blanchett. Butt meet fence. She can deliver some REALLY good performances. We shall see.
Jack black. NOPE. I just don't find the guy funny and he 100% doesn't work for me as CT.
Kevin Hart. FUNNY AS HELL. Not the right man for this part.
Ariana Greenblatt. Could work. The rest I just have no idea.

Casting seems pretty bad throughout, Jaimie lee Curtis, Kevin hart, cate blanchett. I think they really dropped the ball with that off the bat. i love the borderlands games and that's enough for me. I would have gone with a different cast closer to source material, in terms of age and height they aren't right

I'm going to see it and unlike many on here I will decide if I enjoyed it or not.
It's not that critics don't sometimes have valid points, most completely overlook whether or not it's entertaining.
Nitpickers have a hard time enjoying some things because their intention is to nitpick, not to enjoy.

The story of Borderlands is not the kind that makes for a good movie. Some video games are just great video games, some video games have a beautifully built world with a story that's worthy of the big screen. Borderlands is not that kind of story. great game. not good enough for a movie though.

The casting crew or person, has no idea what they’re doing, no idea what the game is about, what the lore is, or who the beloved characters are. Same casting skills, and set vibes from Netflix cowboy bebop. Love Jack, but why not use the same voice actor for Claptrap

considering lillith is meant to be in her 20s being played by a woman in her 50s this was already going to be a bomb straight from the get go, if they had been better in casting (cause literally only kreig looks the part) and writing it could have been fun.

From the start I had low expectations. Most live action video game movies never do well. And if they wanted to actually make a good Borderlands movie they shoulda made it ANIMATED. Borderlands was never gonna translate well into live action.

I still want to give it a fair shake. People on the internet have a pretty bad habit of absolutely bashing the crap out of anything as soon as the concept emerges, then write it off as soon as they don't agree with any calls made.

Well yeah, if you don't lead with Handsome Jack as the focus of a Borderlands movies, do you really know what made Borderlands so special. Also Tiny Tina would never be disturbed by anything, she is too traumatised for that.

It starts with the actors. It's no use casting actors for a film who don't fit into the film. Even if some of the cast have definitely delivered top performances in their careers. If something doesn't fit, it just doesn't fit.
